Respect for the cops in this instance because if I was them, and I confronted a shoplifter that pulled a knife, I wouldn't give two ####s what was stolen, take it.

It's Wal-Mart. They'll make it.

Actually he was resisting arrest in the most classic and straight forward definition of the term since LPO have the right to detain.

Sure, you can say no you can't search me, and they can still lawfully detain you, escort you back to the store and call the cops.

Hmmm...an Exacto Knife is extremely sharp, and could go deep, a little more dangerous then a set of keys, I have never cut myself with a set of keys.

I would imagine they could hold him until police arrived and they could search him?

No idea what they would do if I said no, I suspect they would detain me.

They can call the cops if they think I stole something. I'm not going to allow a Wal Mart employee to "arrest" me.

Interesting, would you pull out a knife and stab one if they tried to?

If you didn't steal anything then why are you worked up?

I must say you have picked an odd hill upon which to battle.

What bothers me is the LPO going for the headlock which can be a chokehold, most police forces don't even allow them as they are very dangerious and people have died from using them. IMO these wannabe cops should be trained not to get violent and just follow and wait for the cops if a suspect won't stop. If 2 guys in jeans and baseball hats tried to stop me in a parking lot I would have issues.

And most people would reach for any kind of weapon if they are being choked. 2 guys jumped me in a bar parking lot years ago and tried it, one of them got a car antenna wrapped around their neck,(which ended up costing me $80.00) had I had a pocket knife...who knows!

Because there is no good reason these random guys should legally be allowed to touch a suspect, let alone try to detain them. Call the cops to deal with it if someone steals from your store, don't hire a few dumb meatheads to chase them into the parking lot and put them in a chokehold while waiting for cops to show up.

That's pretty much what I'm getting from thus thread. Keep it up.

There is no good reason to refuse to stop and talk to an LPO, unless you have stolen something....

And this is true but as the news article pointed out the events leading up to this video have not been seen. What prompted them to try and detain him? We need a few more facts.

Agreed, more information is better.

However, as a generalization, if you have not stolen anything, perhaps you should stop and speak to the LPOs or security guards.

Again this is one of those video that starts midway through the situation. There is a good chane they could have already called the cops. Having been through numerous shop lifting incidents, the cops could easily take over an hour to arrive.

If a thief, or anyone for that matter wants to get in their car and go, words alone will not stop them. In most cases the thief is known to LPO's and they are waiting for a time when they are 100% sure of a theft before attemping to detain them.

I'm obviously not going to change anyone's mind, but the fact that people aren't angered by the fact that Wal Mart employees can legally use force to detain suspected shoplifters blows my mind. I don't know how a single person is okay with that.
