And there was always a monopoly. NHL owned 100% of the online distribution excluding national games.
The bottom line for me is that Rogers is charging me an extra $50 for the exact same (or worse) service as last year. As an out-of-market Flames fan, Gamecentre was perfect. I got to see every Flames game on my computer except for TSN games and HNIC, which CBC streamed online for free.

This season is more expensive and the only reason seems to be because Rogers wants me to buy their Internet/TV packages. The incentive is they have all the NHL hockey. But I can't get Rogers or their Fiber Optic TV/Internet bundled packages here (which is what they are trying to sell to most of the other parts of Canada). So I'm stuck with this more expensive/crappier Gamecentre product, even though I'm offered a much worse alternative than last year.

Why can't I just buy what I want to buy at the exact same service for the exact same price as for last year?

We can't be happy as consumers that Rogers gets to ream whatever they want down the throats of the Canadian market just because they dropped a huge ton of cash in front of the NHL head office. We are getting suckered here.

No worries and points well taken. I'm just reacting as a loyal GCL subscriber who has had his GCL access chopped with no warning, and who has no plans to hook up with Rogers cable/internet (not available where I live, Vancouver) or data (I'm happy with my current carrier).
Not sure how Rogers will get me local games on GCL--are they going to contact Shaw to determine that I receive Sportsnet Pacific as part of my Shaw cable subscription? Maybe, but that seems like a stretch. In any case, offering me local Canucks (ugh) games on my tablet isn't much of a benefit, as I could watch those games on TV.
I've been purchasing GCL because I like to watch the Flames here on the coast.
Now it appears I'll be charged 33% more (or is it 25%, my math sucks) for GCL under the new Rogers regime, which is kind of a kick in the sack. As the saying goes, if I'm going to get ****ed, I'd like a kiss at least!

No internet access? Otherwise this GCL would get you the games there.

Assuming Shaw will join up with Rogers, i'm sure they will figure out a way to determine if you have Sportsnet locally.

The TSN web player (Bell) will let you view it via a Rogers account (although not Shaw)

I've never paid more than $150. And as little as $50 (in the abbreviated 2012/13 season).

I believe the very first year in 2008 it was $190 + tax....or something like that.

and you could ONLY watch it on computer back then. So it has been worse

They sure make it hard for someone who is willing to pay for a product that is simple enough to deliver.

To be fair, I just tried NHL.com's old GCL app and it still delivers content. Browser access now under Rogers auspices does not.
I'll stop whining now.

If you're still with Bell, set up a dish at your cabin and take a Bell receiver from Calgary to your cabin. It will act the same as if it was in Calgary and will be on Calgary time. This is not illegal although it is against Bell's rules if you have active receivers in two different locations, but if not mentioned they tend to look the other way. If you only have the one receiver active, no problem just set it up at your cabin without changing your Bell address.

I really hope unblock-us figures it out, but I have my doubts. They don't have spotify working, and I think this may go the same way.

I don't know that it is that cut and dry. Gcl has no more rights to sell flames games to calgarians than a pirated site does. Of course the fact that gcl is now owned my Rogers makes that statement a little more complicated.

I doubt there is any crime involved in viewing using either method. I imagine that Roger's will do everything they can to stop unblockus type workarounds, so not surprised they are figuring out ways to block it out. I've heard mlb.TV did similar things in the us last year.

Not really. Only if you have an early preview code.
