My Johnny hype knows no bounds or shame. I fully expect him to turn into a Theoren Fleury-level star on this team.

Mmm I'm not feeling these comparisons. To me, Gaudreau's upside is like a Jagr with better hands, or a Lindros type who always keeps his head up.

At least we waited 3 years to make such claims. So, not fully Oiler-esque.

And he has done some extraordinary things in that time.

As long as you fans with unreasonable expectations don't get overly down on him if he struggles in the NHL. It would be a shame to see fans piling on a 5'8" player because too many expected are expecting a MacKinnon impact.

do you think his height impacts his ability to withstand fan pressure?

You forgot to bold this part.

Crazy as it sounds, if Johnny reaches his ceiling, that's the company he'll be in. A LOT of ifs that play into it, though.
Seems a lot less ridiculous when you read it all together.

I'm not usually one to get angry at prospects, so even if he disappoints, I doubt I will add to much fan discord (if that even matters in the grand scheme of things).

Either way, I'm not expecting him to be of MacKinnons level, as that guy seems to be the complete package. I see Johnny as more of a Fleury/Loob/Nilsson/Huselius type that adds a lot of skill and fun to the game, but I wouldn't want to put all the responsibility on their shoulders.

But yeah, I'm definitely way past Nathan Gerbe expectations. While he may start in the AHL, I totally wouldn't be surprised to seem him stick with the club this year and get 15-20 goals.

Nope but it may impact his ability to become a dominant player in the NHL. Time will tell.

Interesting with the mention of MacKinnon as a possible player from which to gauge Gaudreau's potential, and also to separate him from lower expectations for Bennett. And yet I have come to consider MacKinnon to be a pretty good comparison to Bennett in terms of their respective developmental tracks in juniour:

Both were very similar in size in their draft year. Both were close in age in their draft year. Both had only played two years of juniour prior to the draft, and were among the youngest players selected at the draft. Bennett scored more goals and points in his draft year in a more difficult league, but MacKinnon's point/game rate and overall production were higher. Both are highly skilled, all round players with exceptional vision and an edge to their game.

Bennett actually tracks really closely to MacKinnon. I really think he could be a "MacKinnon lite" if not directly comparable to MacKinnon himself. For my money, it is a more accurate comparison to make than between Gaudreau and MacKinnon.

I think MacKinnons amazing skating is what separates him from guys like Bennett and into a whole other category.

MacKinnon skates better than some of the best players in the NHL and he's only 18 years old. It's actually unfair how good his skating is.

We don't overrate our prospects on here, we throw them to the wolves. As for JG's size, we are not in the 90's anymore. The game has opened up for smaller guys to succeed. Then again, the kid has faced critics like you his entire life and all he has done is prove them wrong. Guess who's next?

You're right in saying Gaudreau has huge upside but I'll wait to see how it goes before anointing him as our next star. He still could turn out average or he could get completely overwhelmed by NHL aggressive hockey.

As for Gaudreau versus McDavid, Johnny is 4 years older.

Really glad to see Granlund's getting some love now from others. Deserves it.

You're not "bucking the trend". Don't get me wrong, Johnny has huge upside and I hope he becomes a star, but scouts have said Mcdavid is the best prospect since Crosby.

Not really fair to compare Gaudreau to Mcdavid in my opinion. Gaudreau is much older than him.

I know York (his coach at BC) has made the comparison several times in terms of vision and hockey sense. There have also been several journalists to make the comparison. I don't personally know any professional scouts and don't have access to their notes, but the comparisons are out there.

Can't we all be exicted about Gaudreau without being ridiculous and comparing him to all-time legends?
