What a fun movie. And Green Zoe Saldana is just as hot as normal Zoe Saldana but both are still hotter than big blue Zoe Saldana. Unless're into serious cat face.
All in all that was one well put together movie. Brought together all the major character together nicely, the foe was well done. Bah, it was all great, had a lot of fun with that movie. If it weren't for the crowd I don't think I'd have laughed out loud as much so even the viewing experience was good.
"Guardians of the Galaxy" had a big opening weekend, with early estimates from Box Office Mojo stating the film brought in $94 million at the box office, making it both the biggest August debut ever, as well as almost on par with "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" (which earned $95 million domestic in its first weekend).
Feige has said in previous interviews that the fate of certain future Marvel projects rests on the shoulders of Guardians. It has done well, and I am guessing will continue to do well, so I think this means Marvel is going to try some more off the cuff stuff. I am glad that this crappy movie has paved the way for Black Panther.
Possible spoilers about Guardians 2, but more just hints and possible story lines:
Spoiler!

"I know a lot of where I want to go," Gunn told Film Divider. "I have a lot of ideas for stories and characters that are going to appear, and there are documents written up, that some people have, about Peter Quill’s father and his relationship, a lot of stuff about Yondu and a lot of stuff about Drax that nobody knows.
"There are a lot of things that are part of the overall schematic that already exist, not to mention a lot of stuff about all of the cultures. There’s a lot of stuff about Xandarian and Kree culture that I’ve written down or I have in my head, as well as Krylorians and Ravagers."

I was just using the Green Lantern movie as a comparison for crapiness. This movie was not funny, the main actor tried way to hard to be Han Solo or Captain Kirk and the over the top CGI was just out of hand for me.. like who directed this? The spawn of Peter Jackson and Micheal Bay?
Next.
I'm honestly not sure we watched the same movie.
Biggest surprise of the movie for me had to be Bautista. Surprised me with his ability to play the smarter side of Drax.

This has probably been the best Marvel film made so far with broad appeal and great sensibilities.
It's frankly even more amazing to me that we are getting to this stage of maturity in Hollywood in how they approach these films. In the mid 90's or mid 2000's, this would have been one of the most horrible films of all time as it would have been made like Howard the Duck / Batman & Robin with executive producers George Lucas & Jon Peters, directed by Joel Schumacher, and starring Eddie Murphy.
The Avengers was overrated and I think the sequel will be disappointing as well. It was a big smash up against hordes of aliens and Avengers 2 will be a smash up against a horde of robots.

Bautista really owned it as Drax. Perfect timing and delivery. "nothing goes over my head... My reflexes are too fast, I would catch it." My favourite quote haha. Great movie.

I went into it with zero expectations as I had no clue who or what the Guardians are/were...and I was blown away by how well it was done.
I thought the script moved well, even with all the exposition they had to jam in the front, the acting was very good, with Dave Bautista being a huge surprise and the two main voice actors were terrific, and it was genuinely funny and heartfelt, by the third act I was invested in the characters and what was to become of them. A very solid film.
To the person who made the Michael Bay reference; you couldn't be more wrong.
I will give you one example: the shot of Ronan's (sp?) ship crashing into Nova...if that was Bay it would have been minutes long, with fast cuts, shaky cameras, screaming, bad dialogue and general mayhem. Instead we got a long one shot, from way back, of the building impact and the fireball...I thought it was the perfect way to shoot that scene. in fact, as I was watching it, I thought "Michael Bay should go to school on this film, it might just salvage his reputation"
I'm looking forward to the next one.

Who is Starlord's father going to be? Adam Warlock? Black bolt? Nova? Was there a hint to who he actually is and I missed it?
Was definitely hoping the CGI would be a bit better on Thanos... Or have them do up Brolin in makeup. He looked too much like a video game boss.
I can't remember... Does Thanos have a motive... Like trying to impress Death? Or is he just a bad guy?
So in Planet Hulk The Hulk is captured by the Sakaarans after being shot into space and forced to fight as a gladiator in their arena for entertainment. I wonder if this is the link between the gotg and the avengers in the future. The gotg bring the hulk back to earth after rescuing him from being a slave in a planet hulk movie. But you don't need Ruffalo in a planet hulk movie so I'm probably way off.
Vin Diesel as Groot and Bradley Cooper as Rocket. I thought it was a joke at first since Groot only has "one line" but it really was him who did it and he did a great job.

Starlord's father has been revealed in the comics but I don't want to turn this into a Game of Thrones books/no books thread. Just letting you know that if you want to find out it's out there.

Off to grab the soundtrack!
I would like the Thanos/Death relationship explored but I don't know if they would do that in the feature films.
Planet Hulk and World War Hulk would make a great series of films but they really haven't played the "bad side" of Hulk in the Avengers to cause the audience to understand why his friends would exile him into space in the first place.
I thought it was the perfect way to shoot that scene.
It's the best way to shoot most scenes; where you can actually see what's happening. Sometimes it can be good to zoom in on something if the focus on the object is important to the plot symbolically or thematically otherwise it's way better to be zoomed out where the audience can see exactly what is going on and what the environment looks like.

My thoughts on the Avengers
With Guardians I just felt like I could watch it again right after
Vin Diesel as Groot and Bradley Cooper as Rocket. I thought it was a joke at first since Groot only has "one line" but it really was him who did it and he did a great job.
Diesel was a standout especially, he had three words to work with (well, 5, if you include the tearjerker moment) and was able to extract lots of emotion from them. That's acting.

it gives you a sense of real scale..
too many directors now rely on silly tricks and effects...shaky cam, lens flare, fast cuts..they cheat.
I much prefer a filmmaker who doesn't cheat like that and can create beautiful, emotive frames.
I didn't know who James Gunn was before...I do now
I don't think they're cheating, seems like they think it's good cinematography. The shaky cam makes a chase scene more intense in their heads.
There's also making the other mistake of having way too much on screen, most of it cgi, to convey a grandiose scale but it ends up looking completely unrealistic and nonsensical.

There is a reason they chose Diesel for this role, he's done the exact role before:
Still one of my favorite animated films of all time.

I laughed a lot, I almost cried, I had a blast.
It was my favourite marvel movie...just edged out the avengers.
I don't buy many movies, but I will definitely own this one.
