yeah, given the difference in KMs, age, and potential repair costs, the BMW seems like more of an ego-driven purchase to me. Just to have a BMW is not worth the headaches IMO.
Hyundai and Toyota have proven to make reliable cars (not that BMW doesnt) and if you care more about the longevity of your vehicle than the style, the prior would be my choice.

That was it for me. When you can buy a used car with 1 year of maintenance, it's time to get a japanese car.

Or you can shop around on tires and not get gouged buying them from BMW. Too many people just shug and pay instead of doing their due diligence on car stuff. I can't see maintenance stuff costing anywhere near $10k unless it needs a motor or transmission.

How do you get 140K KM on an X5 in Singapore?
Edit: A quick google shows X5s are $80K USD ish used at that vintage in Singapore. Must be quite the deal you found. I'd flip it and make $60K.

haha BigNumbers, it's possible to get 140k in Singapore but i'm not getting a car in Singapore.I'm moving over to Calgary, would need a car to get about, so i thought i get some advise here. The prices of cars in singapore are just skyrocketing high.
check out the silly prices here for 2007 BMW X5

3 months old X5 cost $323,888sgd (C$279,000)

You guys are scaring me.
My recently purchased M-Class just hit 90K and is out of warranty. T.T
Windshield has to be replaced for certain. A big rock flew into it from a truck after my recent trip to BC. The diesel was amazing though. I made it to Vancouver on a single tank.

There's always the guy that has one of these things and it runs like a top with minimal maintenance for like 20 years. That'll be you, dude!

I've always felt that if you're getting the luxury vehicle for the fact that it's a luxury vehicle, you should save up for a new(ish) model to truly enjoy the experience. Also repairs as many have stated. If you are on a budget now, get great financing on a reliable newer car and save for your dream vehicle down the road

Go aftermarket for the windshield if possible. Diesels run forever if maintained properly.

little things add up very quickly. that year also involved a new motor for the side mirror, brakes, cv and ball joint... the "wearing and tear" parts not covered under extended. heck, new tires (winter and summer set) were over 5k alone, plus the cost of storage at the stealership.
could it have been cheaper if i shopped around? probably. but why? simply go to the dealership next door and get a car there. they serve you an espresso upon entry, they come to your office to pick up your car for oil changes... and "wear and tear" repairs don't happen at 60k. the car from this dealership is over 100k now (sold it 1.5 years ago to a friend). nothing but fluids, brake pads (but had a couple of recalls).

Friend's 2005 X5 is at 320,000km and going strong. He has been well maintaining it since he got it and hasn't had any issues other then regular maintenance.

Incredible cost you guys endure. I must have been a lucky SOB all these years.
I used to drive new cars when I was young. Then I started to buy 2 year old cars with 20-30K on them and keep them for about 3 years.
In the last 14 years I have had 4 of these vehicles (me and my wife)
The total cost outside of oil changes:
2 tires(200) and front brakes (200) and a fuel pump (800) on Olds Alero. I kept that car for 10 years.
2 Tires on Windstar ($200) Kept 3 years.
Power Window motor on a Grand Cherokee ($150). Put it in myself. Drove that for 3 years.
Full Brakes and 4 tires on a Chevy Avalanche. (2500) Damn you 20 inch rims. 4 years and counting.
No tranny oil changes, antifreeze flushes and any other "recommended" stuff.
Really shocked at what you guys pay to maintain these cars. Hardly seems worth it to pay a premium for a nicer car.
My wife has a new import now so we will see what the cost is when the warranty goes.

You pay thousands for that convenience factor. Two sets of tires should have been 2-3k not 5. I just took the run flats that came on my BMW off and replaced them with Michelin Pilot summer tires for $1,300 installed, if I did it through the dealer it would have been double. Any vehicle is a rip off if you do everything through the dealer, including my domestic truck. $140/hr shop rates and 200% mark up on parts adds up awfully fast.

That better be one amazing espresso.
Use an independent shop for any maintenance (most cars have a specialty place like Riegel, or Mr Volvo, etc), and UrbanX for any tires, and you can save yourself some serious money. Especially with cars like BMW or Mercedes.
Convenience is nice and all, but when you're talking thousands of dollars over the ownership period of your car, I'd rather spend the extra effort. If I really need that coffee, I can stop at Phil and Sebastian on the way back... or hell, buy myself a top-end espresso machine from the savings.

I bought Nokian tires from Kal Tire and they were about $1,500 installed. If you are going to complain about the place by calling it a stealership, it's hypocritical to ask why you'd go somewhere else when they serve you an espresso. It's as lame as calling it City Hall, Silly Hall.

^Sorry, I wasn't clear. By "dealership next door", was referring to Lexus Calgary... I was (still am) very unhappy with Calgary BMW and their product. I can probably still come up with old receipts for cost of ownership comparing a bmw and a toyota product (similar MSRP new) to justify my use of the word stealership.

I'd give up a first born, but mostly because children are awful and cost you money.
In the two years I've had mine, I've paid about $3,000 in repairs and maintenance. I don't love that, but for a 6 year old vehicle, I didn't think it was crazy. I also got a really good deal on it from my boss, and paid about $10,000 less than market.

I'm a cheap ass so 3k a year seems like a lot to me. I've driven my 07 Civic for almost 8 years now and I average about 300 to 500 dollars on maintenance a year. The most I've ever spent on it was $900 at the 100k service. So far I have 150k on it and still running strong with zero problems. I follow the dealership maintenance schedule too. You just turned me off from ever owning a Luxury vehicle.

I'm probably just as cheap (if not more), and I spend about $300-500 per year as well on maintenance for a 2008 Toyota Corolla. The most I've ever spent was $450 at the dealer, and I have a family friend to do some of the work when needed. I also follow the maintenance schedule and it's pretty reasonable. I'm also really cheap on tires as I never buy them here for inflated prices

are x3's as unreliable once out of warranty as the x5? I haven't heard as many horror stories about the x3. Thoughts?
