He follows a long list of mediocre 25s. Dave Roach, Igor Kravchuk, Darren McCarty among others

This is post-Niewy ceremony. It's like when you see an ex with someone new a week after you break up. It just seems.. so soon

I would've kept 25 for Bennett considering he looks so similar to Nieuwy. Might confuse a few people.

Ah yes, Burke and his low number fetish, allowing a 46, 48, 51, 53 and 54 on the roster. Such a stickler for those small numbers.

I think high numbers are ok for guys that wore them throughout junior/college (would still prefer traditional numbers for most part) but I think keeping high numbers from when you were an AHLer is pretty stupid.

Let Bennett continue to wear 93 like he has in his junior career but having Wotherspoon as 56, Baertschi 47, Backlund as 60, Gaudreau as 53 etc. because they were given those numbers as placeholders while they were fill ins on the roster seems silly to me.

I'm happy to see Sven change from the terrible 47 to a real hockey number. Hopefully he becomes a real NHLer this year as well.

“I am truly honoured to receive this recognition as a member of the Flames family and to have my name and number recognized by one of the finest hockey teams I have ever had the pleasure to compete on,” said MacInnis. “The Forever A Flame program serves a multitude of purposes but most importantly for me as a former player, it permits a bright young player in the future to wear my number and the tradition that accompanies it.

The Flames have established a tradition that permits Flames of the future, with an opportunity to proudly wear the numbers of some of the Flames all-time greats.

That's a MacInnis quote (no doubt with a little help from the organization), but I'm not sure the spirit of a 'bright young player' is embodied in Bollig.

I dislike Forever A Flame

What exactly makes one two-digit number any more or less stupid than another one? And where is the cut-off? Is 50 totally legit, but 51 outrageous?

Such a silly thing to get hung up about out.

Numbers? I don't really care. I recognize players by skating style so they're not really needed.

As I said numbers a guy has had for a while are better than the new one given in TC/pre-season.

I am not that hung up on it I just prefer traditional numbers over the high ones.

Bahaha! That's a great idea - everyone's jersey numbers should be their AAV in 100's of thousands.

Was half-expecting Gaudreau to be listed as #13.

With the exception of Jones none of those players are full time NHL players yet - once they do it's likely they will have to wear a lower number (although I could see him making a few exceptions). Burke is fine with using higher numbers on players who haven't made the team.

about a month ago i bought a #13 Gaudreau jersey anticipating this was going to happen.

Not sure why its such a big deal to Burke but when he said this was going to happen I knew he was serious about it.

He's honoring a true Flame great, Calder Trophy winner Willi Plett!

I still haven't heard a valid reason why a player wearing a high number is a bad thing. As long as they don't try to do something stupid and wear something like #66 it should be completely up to the player what they wear

Hopefully not giving Jones a lower number is a hint that management does not see him on the roster come training camp.
