I'm not convinced Backlund last the year with the Flames. Not saying that's what I want, but depending how Grandlun, knight, Reinhart and now Bennett progress, Flames may be able to deal From a position of strength right now.
Hope no one takes this as a bash, but Backlund is starting to play well, and if the Flames view his long term upside to be less or equal to some of the players mentioned above, I could see them dealing him.

That there might be a glut of great NHL talent down the middle is a bit unsettling - it is not something familiar.

Even if Backlund regresses, I want him on this team long term. I don't know if anyone loves being a Flame more than that guy, and it's not like he's a liability out there even if his point production goes down.

I don't dissagree, I was just thinking he'd be very appealing to other teams, entering his prime, but if the Flames feel good about their younger centres upside, maybe a deal for Backlund to increase the depth on the back end when it come to top end prospects.
Regardless, I just hope he plays well and either stays with the club putting up great numbers or is leveraged for great value.

I don't see where Backlund slots into our roster in the next 2-3 years. I can see him being shopped at the deadline.

absolutely he would, which is why I think his signing with us for a cheap short contract days are over. We had the chance to lock him up last year and went short again, we'll pay for it next time.

The perfect 3rd line center on a contending team. Our Jarrett Stoll.

Exactly.

Monohan, Bennett, Stajan, Backlund, Bouma, Byron, Reinhart, Arnold, Granlund, Knight. That's a lot of Centres. Take your pick of the last 6 to fill that role in 3 years.

Assuming they are all still in the Flames organization or Just never make the push to be NHL regulars.

Most toward the end of that list simply don't have the physical tools, imo.
Think Kopitar, Getzlaf and Thornton. This is who Backlund went head to head with very successfully.

Yeah, it's great to list a bunch of center prospects, but I'd rather look at the one that is executing the role that I'm penciling him in for already.
Stajan will be gone, Byron won't be our 3rd line center, Bouma is an energy player, Reinhart is moving to the wing, Granlund is likely going to play in a higher end capacity. That leaves Arnold and Knight. I'll stick with Mikael Backlund.

Exactly, he's the kind of guy who if you have him at 3C he can either take on the opposition top guys to the tune of a draw (thus leaving your 1C & 2C to dominate against weaker competition) or you can just deploy him PvP and win that match-up.
It won't happen till mid-season but Backlund is a guy you keep around for a long time.

this is where I'm at too...
I think Backlund is worth ~ $3.5M, but I want to see at least half a season before I start to really evaluate.
Brodie..too soon. He needs to show some progression first. He was good, no question, but I want to see the next gear.

Everyone here has watched the Western Final and Stanley Cup Finals the past 3 years. Look at those teams, that's what it's going to take (or pretty damn close) to get past the first round in the West Conf. from now on. It's not a whole lot different from our '89 cup team where we needed 4 centres?
He has to grow in one way or the other to stay on this team, either a shutdown faceoff guy or a point producer. The '04 run was ten years ago...the new motto for all has to be, your part of the solution or part of the problem, no more middle ground.

We definately want to buy some UFA years from Brodie si if this year shows regression you might want to do a 1 year deal where at the end he is still an RFA. If he shows progression lock him up long term.
Minimum on a 1 year deal would be 4.5. If we want to buy UFA years it will be at least 5 for 5 and probably a little more on one of the numbers.

If Brodie has another year where he progresses the way he has the last two seasons, I'd give him 5/$20M. He's the next Dan Boyle.
Backlund, I would over pay to keep the term down. 3/$14M. I like him, but I want to be able to have the flexibility to move him in a few more years for a really nice return when more prospect centres are ready to take the next step. Or we can extend him since he's a pretty prototypical #3C.
