Really? He wouldn't waive to get out of Buffalo?

Was Edmonton the only team interested?

Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie 15 mins
BUF could decide whether to keep player/contract on roster or initiate non-compliance buyout. Either way, helps BUF get to floor.

I wonder if they will throw an unreasonable offer sheet out there at Subban, Nino, Johansen or some other 20 something group 2er.

Not the best way to re build but why else are they clearing so much cap space.

Buffalo is the last team in the NHL that should be throwing out offer sheets.

Their 1st round picks are going to be top 3 for the foreseeable future

A 32 year old player with 7 years left on his contract, this is a good decision for the Sabres. This is a horrendous contract for a rebuilding team. It would be an anchor by the time they are a playoff team.

Hitting the salary cap floor is easy without wasting money. They have three months to do it.

Some options to do it smartly:
  • offer to take assets along with bad contracts to teams close to the ceiling
  • bonus laden contracts
  • short term UFAs, which also have the potential to be flipped for assets at the deadline
  • retaining salary on trades

So cap recapture is obviously the reason behind this.

I'd imagine they must have spoken with a few UFA's during this "courting period" and know that a few of them must be ready to sign there because they are going to get paid more than anywhere.

Sabres are redefining the art of tanking.

Can't they always just keep Ehroff around until he really starts to decline then use the compliance buyout? I'm not familiar with the rules but you still need someone to eat up the minutes.

Has there ever been a team in history of hockey that has performed bigger tank job than Sabres?

No....the compliance opportunity is over as of tomorrow at midninght.

Buffalo will get to the floor...it wont be that difficult either. They will be able to offer a bunch of 3/4th liners/botton pairing D 3 million a year for 1 or 2 years....money those guys will not get anywhere else.

Though to be fair, not sure if the Oilers were purposely tanking or if they were just no good. Why not both?

Sabres are an embarrassment, it's so obvious they're doing this to get McDavid/Eichel, could potentially reach Oilers-level embarrassing in a few years. It's reminiscent of the crap Penguins pulled to land Lemieux.

Also, let's keep in mind the season isn't starting tomorrow. Buying out Leino actually improved the team and the Ehrhoff contract, while not terrible cap-wise, had way too long of term and the player did not want to be here. Lots of time to go til day one.

Tim Murray: "The fact that he quite frankly doesn’t want to be here makes it easy," Murray told The News. "I’ve said at the start that if you don’t want to be here we’ll make it happen. He’s made I believe $22 million in three years and feels that we’re not going in the right direction, but he really hasn’t had much part in the direction the team has gone. So time to move on."

Again, getting rid of bad contracts and toxic attitudes does not necessarily constitute tanking. Depending on who replaces these players it's likely a dramatic improvement.

I hope they can't reach the cap floor and lose their 2015 1st round draft pick.

See, to me this is borderline circumnavigation. Paying low level guys way above their market rate just to make the floor.

I mean, whats to stop any team just packing their rosters with AHL quality players and giving them 3m for 1 year contracts? Seems wrong to me.

Edmonton will be all over him. Klowe, Ebs, Nuge, hallsy will be salivating at the thought of adding the Hoff.
