I'm for keeping Sven another year to see what we've got. If we're not satisfied at that point or if other prospects in our lineup surprise on the upside, consider a trade then. If Sven gets it together, he'll be a player we hate to have given up on.
When did Sutter ever trade for a young, talented defensemen?
That would be reference to the Olli Jokinen trade for the pick that became Gormley.
I am not a Sutter apologist, but I think there is way too much revisionist history when talking about that trade. At the time, Olli was the big centre we were hoping could take us (and Iggy) to the next level. Fans were genuinely pumped. The pick was higher than most would have thought post trade, and Gormely slipped lower than what was expected as well.
Not a great trade in retrospect, but at the time there was some logic to the deal.

I agree.... we were also going to have some cap related losses the following year... doing the trade when he did allowed us to get Jokinen and Cammy on the same team for a year.
Give to get, Flames were contending, but it was a slippery slope after that.

People also need to remember Giordano (shoulder surgery), Bourque (high ankle sprain), Langkow (hand), Prust (concussion), were all on IR right before the trade deadline that season.
Calgary was up 10 points on Vancouver after Jokinen's first game and then Regehr and Sarich were also injured in April.
Injuries just crushed the Flames that season. I can understand why Darryl rolled the dice on Jokinen, he needed to improve the team's skill.
Ah yes Gormley, another gem of a trade from Darryl Sutter.
In Sutter's defence a lot of people, myself included liked the move at the time. The team was a contender or atleast very close. I truly believe if we weren't so injured those playoffs we could have made some noise. Unfortunately we gave up the first in the wrong draft as well.
Its unreal how quickly the fan base has turned on Baerschi
As a 20 year old he scored at a .500 PPG pace and showed a lot of promise, also had great chemistry with Monahan (watch ACs highlight video of Monahans goals, the first 5 minutes is essentially Sven highlights.) There was a ridiculous amount of outrage on this site when he got sent down for some needed seasoning
Obviously there were/are some holes in his game, but hes only 21 and improved a ton near the end of last season. Hes progressed as well as anyone could hope of a mid first round pick
I can't wait until Monahan goes through a bit of a sophomore slump and he becomes the centre of all of CPs trade proposals for other teams struggling prospects

It's interesting, too, how Monahan's production pace diminished after Sven went to Abby. I think he's an important piece moving forward.
I think it had more to do with his broken foot than Sven being sent down. He was awful for a while after coming back from that injury. He started scoring again later in the season though.
