Bit of a shame, but also not terribly hard to replace. The real win here is that maybe a few posters here on CP will finally stop moaning about the Regehr trade like a 16-year-old girl who was just dumped by the love of her life.

I believe in the Jays.

It's a pipedream but I really want Niskanen.

Sounds good to me.

I'd be a big fan of going after Fayne from NJ. The other guy I'd like them to look at is Bellemore from Carolina. Both are big, youngish guys that I think played underrated roles. The best thing the Flames can do this UFA season is fill some cap space with good value contracts.

He already spent a year in the AHL. Had a slow start, but I think by the mid-point in the season he was already a capable top 4 AHL defenseman. Not that he can't learn more in the AHL, but he looks NHL ready after his short call-up last season.
We have enough NHL veterans between the NHL and AHL. Considering our current young D-man in Brodie is already on top line duties, there is most definitely room for Wotherspoon in this line-up to start the year.

No more watching Chris Butler in a Flames jersey?
I'm a HUGE fan of this news.
I didn't think this day would ever come.

Give the guy a watch and a handshake. "Thanks for all the hard work."
A promising young defenceman who never really lived up to the promise. He provided a (mostly) solid NHL-calibre defender to the team while he was here, and was able to earn his paycheque and roster spot.
If he's not coming back, I wish him the best of luck, except when playing against the Flames.

Where would Niskanen slot in our pairings? IF we did somehow by the grace of the gods get him.

No surprise to me, the guy was below average in every aspect of the game. There were no rumbling at all during the season about possibly re-signing Butler and you knew Treliving would want to bring in his own guy. A lot of better alternatives in the UFA market and the Flames have the cap room to look for an upgrade.

I'd put him ahead of Wideman.

I thought he improved somewhat last season, and was indifferent to re-signing him or just letting him walk. He is what he is - a depth defencemen.
There was only one wrong move here - signing him to a multi-year deal, even if it was relatively cheap. Happy that didn't happen.

Good lord would that be a mobile top 4. Lacking size and toughness as a group, but man would they be able to skate the puck out of trouble.

That's probably why I prefer Green/Boychuk/McQuaid over Niskanen. It doesn't hurt to offer him a contract though. Doubt he'd sign with us anyways.
What term and $ would you guys offer to Niskanen?

He's probably looking at a deal somewhat similar to Wideman's, if not more IMO.

That's about the calmest I've ever heard you talk about Butler. I'm glad the dogs in your signature are gone.

Guys is not a winner, he is happy with playing in the NHL and collecting the check
we need players that would rather die than lose
