I'd bet Gio + gets the 1st overall out of Florida. He's a vet D still in his prime and now playing on a whole new level. He's exactly what they need.
Not saying we should make this move, just pointing out that a deal is probably there. But knowing mgmt's stance on Giordano, extremely doubtful it would happen (but then again...who knows. "long term" right?)
Exchanging Gio for Ekblad means we'd be significantly worse defensively next year, simultaneously putting us in McDavid range.

Personally I think it would be Gio for 1st +... No way should we have to add from our end to get that #1 pick this year.

I don't think it would be a plus for either. It would probably be Gio for 1st straight up if it ever occurred.

I'd like to set up a time when you can interview with Trevor Linden. What's your schedule like next week?

Sure it would be 1st + for Gio if he wasn't a Flame.
However, in order to show how objective and not a homer they are, some people feel the need to overcompensate.

Who in their right mind trades their captain/leader and best player at age 30 for a kid who might take 4+ years to make an impact.

Toronto should try Gardiner plus for that 1 pick!

I have said the same thing in another thread.
Got the impression that some people believe that Ekblad will be a franchise dman, which is a huge longshot. He could easily be #2 or worse.

Suggesting Gio trades is completely pointless. Burke LOVES him so does Hartley. Treliving has praised him a ton since coming on board. There is no way he is moved for a pick or anything realistic. He means more to the flames future than some advocating reading him realize. While he might be past prime and only a 4/5 Dman when the team plans to contend the leadership skills he passes down to the young players will be with them far longer.

I wouldn't trade Gio for picks. I don't think icing a line-up of rookies and sophomores has proven to be a strong way to build a contender. For every Pittsburgh, there's an Edmonton or NYI.

Keep in mind that short term relief does not preclude the acquisition of a top player who is 27 to 28 years old with years on his contact. For example, if Nashville offered Weber for our pick, I bet Burke is making that deal.

Yeah but if all it took was a first round pick Weber would be an Oiler, Sabre, or Panther.

That would guarantee the Flames would finish dead last and assuming no change in the lottery structure the Flames will get McDavid or Eichel.

I think Gardiner plus 8 would do it.
I don't think Ekblad is going to be very good (ie top 3 Dman) and it sounds like other teams are starting to get on board with that line of thinking.

Gio is too important to the team trade, he's not going anywhere. Gio is more than points or time on ice. 3 or 4 years with Gio as captain will imprint our young players with a strong work ethic. Many players work hard but there is that extra dedication a true professional brings to all aspects of their lives. The team needs him here, he's the best thing to happen for us since Iginla and Kipper. Because of that it would take a kings ransom to get Gio.

Gio's had one great season. He's been in the league for a long time. If you can trade him for the first overall pick, I feel you should do it.
He was hot garbage 2 seasons ago. His value has never been higher. Sure, he may have turned some imaginary corner and will be a Norris contender and leader for the remainder of his career... Or he may prove that last season was an exception, not the rule.
Either way, if you can walk away from a draft with the top defenceman and top forward, a rebuilding team has to consider it.
I love Gio, but just dismissing the idea seems irresponsible, from a business standpoint.

You have to at least listen to any offer. You wouldn't be a responsible person in charge if you didn't at least see what's available.
Then when you get an offer, you evaluate it both in terms of how much sense it makes and how it will impact the team both on and off the ice.
Who knows what's out there.
If Florida offered #1 for Gio + say Wotherspoon or something similar, I would have a hard time with saying no even though Gio is so important to our team.
It just depends.
