All those channels and nothing on. Without the NHL I seriously question what we'll be watching on 5 channels. I can't see the NFL allowing more than a couple games during each set, anything more would hurt Sunday Ticket sales. NCAA would seem the obvious one, but I guess we will see.

Could TSN get TV rights for the CHL? They made the World Juniors relevant, could they do the same thing with the CHL?

tsn 3, the all panel channel. all day, everyday.
seriously though, this could be good news for all us 7 nba fans in Canada. instead of showing playoff nba games, tsn went the nhl playoff game (game) and then mirrored the game on tsn 2 (pointless). maybe they'll actual have some decent coverage now.

I wish TSN would also get rights to play AHL games, or at least those of the Canadian team AHL affiliates. I think there is a large enough fan base in Canada to show more regular games. I'm sure a few people on this board would catch every Adirondack game they would play (myself included).

Yeah, it seems odd to do this after losing the NHL national rights. Maybe they are planning on acquiring all the regional rights over the next few years. Unfortunately doesn't Sportsnet have the Flames rights for the next 10 years?
It would be nice if this allowed them to show more live international sports. Canada needs more exposure to Rugby, it is such a great game. The one Aussie Rules game a week is enough though. If you watch any more than that the novelty wears off and you soon realize what a stupid boring sport it is.

It might be time for rugby to boom in this country. If I'm not mistaken, Rugby Sevens Canadian team just pulled off a huge win last week and is now placed higher than ever before. This could be very positive for the future and if rugby receives more exposure via TSN or even CBC it could really grow the sport.

Rugby Sevens is changing everything now that it has been included in the Olympics. It is a fast exciting sport that is easy for people new to rugby to understand. Teams like Canada can also be competitive because you just require athletic players and don't need the depth or a huge forward pack like in international Rugby Union.
Are any of the Sevens tournaments available on TV in Canada? This is something TSN should really look into, especially the Vegas and Hong Kong tournaments.

There is about nine years left on the current deal. But if the rights were up today, you can bet TSN would have been fighting hard for it. Can't predict how the landscape will look a decade from now though.

The one thing I really don't care to see more of is college sports. But I'm sure there are plenty who would, and with 5 channels, they have the bandwidth (if perhaps not the $) to make lots of people happy.

Absolutely!
I've been trying to push for a channel dedicated to amateur and Olympic sport for a long time now; similar to Eurosport 1 and 2 in Europe/Asia/Australia.
I think some demand is there and once people are able to see it live and regularly they'll better begin to appreciate amateur athletes, rather than merely kind of cheering every 4 years.
I don't think it would cost much more than just the rights. To start TSN wouldn't need to use their own hosts or announcers as the feeds already have dedicated hosts.

SN 1 does a fair bit of 'Olympic sports'...I watch World Cup sliding sports, as well as a whole bunch of cycling on there.
I think my hopes for these extra 'feeds' mirror's other people, but I'm a bit worried about the extra content coming from their radio stations...I can see TSN 5 being sportscentre, the odd extra feed (like, say, at the Brier), and, say, TSN Radio Montreal's drivetime show followed by TSN Radio Edmonton's show...so basically ESPNEWS, Canadian style.

Rugby coverage is very limited. I've seen a few games broadcast in Canada over the last couple of years. I think they have been shown on CBC and TSN. Most matches, with the exception of the one they played last summer in Toronto (if I remember correctly), are broadcast in the early morning hours on TSN and rarely get shown during more prime hours.

Looks like a Mister Burke is also a fan of Rugby and was recently named to Rugby Canada's board of directors:

When an organization like Rugby Canada says they want you on their board, why I think that's a great honour.
Professional rugby is coming, in my view. We're playing catch-up with a lot of established professional sports. We're playing catch-up with a lot of broadcast sports, but that doesn't diminish the fact that we think we have a product that can compete with those sports.
Brian Burke will look to help drive the cause of pro rugby forward.
Rugby is a late comer to us here in North America, but that hasn't stopped other sports from acquiring the kind of status they want to have in the professional community. So I think professional rugby is coming. I don't want to give you a time frame on it, but that's our goal.
|
Quote:
Our goal is to get to a place where an athlete like Jamie Cudmore doesn't have to go to France to play. There will be a Canadian pro team that will put him to work, or an American team. So that's our goal. I don't know how close we are to that, but that's our goal.
Those are the discussions we've had. This is a great game and not enough people know about it. That's been true of a lot of sports that have gone on to become successful. Not enough people knew about them or not enough people watched them. That is something we have to fix.
|
Not wanting to derail this thread, but if a pro North American Rugby League is established soon, you would think Burke would want a team in Calgary. I wonder if there would be enough interest here to make it work.
I for one would be first in line to buy season ticket. Especially if it's a legit league like MLS.

You can bet your life TSN will be hyping the crap out of the World U17 and the World Championships over the next several seasons.
The Under 17 tournament is pretty good each year and gets little to no attention, that will change big time I'd imagine.

I love this idea. I wouldn't miss a game. Can't see TSN sending a production crew to all those little AHL barns but it would be great wouldn't it?

Nice spindoctoring on how the TSN president says this move wasn't born of weakness. Translation...Sportsnet caught TSN with their pants down and TSN is playing catch up. The 4 SN feeds did have Connected dedicated to their regional timezones plus SN1 and SN360.
