Move the team to Saskatoon and ship the Blades to Lethbridge or Estavan.

I think Saskatoon is ready, but it wouldn't really solve the travel issues.
I like the idea of having the farm in a city that has a real chance of being a satellite Flames market though.

That's a crappy deal for Saskatoon and the people there.

Are you kidding? Screw the Blades. If I really wanted WHL hockey I'd make the trip up to Prince Albert and watch the Raiders in their cozy barn.

perhaps it has been mentioned already, but will the contract be over at the end of the season or immediately. i would assume end of year. That does not leave much time for the heat to find a new home for the beginning of next season though.

Not sure how realistic of an option this would be, but I'm sure we would get a good number at the Dome every game. I know I'd be there too.
Between the hype of the Flames season just ending and getting excited about the kids and junior hockey fans going through early withdrawals because of the Hitmen early exit, I could see it being a huge draw even if it is just a couple of games.
Even better if we could somehow get Abbotsford prices of $16.50 - $40 for a ticket. Make it Hitmen/Abbotsford prices and watch the Dome go wild for playoff hockey.

Grant Pollack on Global News just reported that the City of Abbotsford is supposedly buying out the Heat completely as the costs were less to buy them out then they were to keep the team.

Canucks not moving in.....
Quote:
The Canucks wouldn't be interested in relocating their farm club to Abbotsford next season even if the city's rink is empty of professional hockey.
"We have no immediate plans," a Canucks official told The Province.

The NHL team may consider looking into Abbotsford down the road, the official said, but the Canucks have five years left on their contract with Utica, four of which are believed to be guaranteed.

If the Canucks aren't moving into Abbotsford anytime soon, you gotta think a WHL franchise will.

All kinds of crazy stories flying around. I don't believe the Flames would sell as they enjoy the control but who knows.

I don't think the Flames sold. I think the City of Abbotsford enacted an exit clause, probably related to the losses. It was essentially a free deal for the Flames, I can't imagine that the contract was written in such a way that the City of Abbotsford would be forced to take huge losses for 10 years if things didn't work out. There had to be some sort of exit clause or buyout clause and I think this is what they've used. In 4 years, they've lost $5M. There was an article in January where the City suggested breaking the contract wasn't an option, but it's pretty easy to see that the residents of Abbotsford were not pleased with the agreement. Perhaps after seeing the numbers for Year 5 (which is the halfway point so it does make sense this would be a point where they could buyout or look at the contract) and hearing more backlash from the public that they decided to get out of it. http://www.theprovince.com/sports/Ab...870/story.html
I get no feeling that this is initiated by the Flames, this is the City of Abbotsford pulling the plug. They have lost a ton of money already and the team is just bleeding them money with no end in sight.

That's reasonable. The way I read your other post, Abbotsford was going to buy the Heat.

Can someone explain to an European why Red Deer could possibly not be the right place for our farm team, and btw. has it ever been considered?
The area population is almost 100,000 and ENMAX Centrium is still a decent arena from the early 90s so it seems to be the obvious choice to me.

Must be tough to buy a home on an AHL salary with the risk of constant relocation

Lack of arena/market size is not the issue, it's the fact that there is an AHL team that plays 90 minutes north of Red Deer and they don't want to over-saturate the region with semi-pro hockey.
In all seriousness I think it has to do with population. Ideally the team should be relocated to Red Deer or Saskatoon but it will likely end up in Upstate New York.

Generally AHL teams don't get relocated to a city with a CHL team. Toronto is the best example I can think of and the St. Mike's were not long for Toronto after that.
