On that note and apologies if it was covered in last night's game thread but I assume Hartley will be hearing from the league for starting McGrattan, Westgarth and Bouma last night?

I don't really like Byron as the RW on that line, I'd personally like to see some size - like the OP mentioned in Colborne.

hahahaha. Ern with little man syndrome protecting johnny hockey would be hysterical.

I agree though, especially the way we went after the canucks earlier this season, would be surprised to see Torts try to send a message back. We better have officer Mcgratton out there protecting him.

I'm kinda worried that Torts will do something dumb and send Kassian or some thug after Johnny. He was pissed that our 4th line was sent out against some kid from Utica so I hope he doesn't have any plans for revenge.

I agree... Between torts and kassian, there's always a danger of them doing something stupid. Hopefully it doesn't happen but if it does... The flames better go old school and bring back the bench clearing brawl. CBC can whine and complain all they want about the image of the NHL if that happens but it's a message the flames have to be wiling to give off if the Canucks think they can target the kids. It would be the lowest of the low for a goon like kassian to go after a kid like gaudreau in his first NHL game straight out of college.

Flames should set the tone early to avoid this. I propose starting the 4th line.

Didn't Hartley start Westgarth, Bouma and Gratts last night? Setting a disclaimer of it being a legit line so he can't catch flack when he does it again tomorrow?

Gaudreau - Monahan - Colborne

Two of the three have good size which counteracts with Johnny's size.

No one's going to take a run at Johnny, Mcgrattan is the scariest guy in the league by a wide margin. They wouldn't be dumb enough to purposefully get him angry.

That's exactly what I thought of when the starting line was announced yesterday.

Only way they get away with it is if they take a run at johnny, fake an injury, leave the game, and hop on a plane immediately.

Everything is relative. If we're picking 1st, 4th or even 5th I'll be extremely disappointed with Ritchie as our pick. If we pick 6th and the consensus top 5 are gone, then sure Ritchie would be ok.

There is a prospect thread to talk about this though....

Gaudreau should play with Monahan and Colborne against the Canucks, the AHL next season to get used to the speed.

Ritchie plays on his off-wing quite a lot - think the Flames would throw him out on the RW permanently if they ended up drafting him. At any rate, the Flames are getting a lot of wingers on the team, even when counting them switching wings. Some prospects will inevitably be traded away.

Back to the thread topic - don't think Backlund is good to go tomorrow, but I would like to see Backlund with Gaudreau for a while next year. Backlund has loads of speed and is so good defensively, and I just haven't seen Backlund really 'click' with anyone in particular yet. I think it helps pairing fast wingers with fast centers. Monahan and Colborne aren't 'slow', but they aren't quick players either, and they seem to work well together.
