For all the back patting about the rebuild going on the flames have two real rookies in the lineup plus Agostino on his tryout who I assume is headed down soon. Everybody else is a vet with a few mid 20s like Colborne, Brodie and Bouma sprinkled in. Glad to see the team getting younger but there is a still a ways to go. Riding a veteran laden lineup late in the season is admirable but not exactly smart.

Couple points to that. One is the amount of injuries to the vets plus Stajan right after the Olympics. At one point we were icing the youngest team in the league and only 30 mil in salary and they were still winning, that's where a lot of optimism is coming from.
Second they are riding the vet lineup because with the AHL team doing very well and gearing up for the playoffs any good young players we can spare to send there have gone. The NHL season is just about over but we can give these players some real confidence and excitement playing in the playoffs on the farm.

I think they've done a good job instituting a meritocracy (despite apparently signing this guy by promising him nhl games - Assessment is different) and I have no complaints about it. The narrative that this has been a quick rebuild even though the team has two real rookies is pretty thin though.
Bottom line if can find mature guys like this from college who you are older you want to give a look to and assess where they fit within the system, doing it now is smart.
Thumbs up on this move from me.

Hopefully they're signing size from college so they can just focus on picking skill in the draft.

If at the end of the season you need still exceed the cap with the bonus cushion because of players achieving their bonuses, that amount will roll over next season and deducted from next year's cap leaving the team with less cap space.
However the Flames will not be anywhere near the salary cap so it is a non-issue.
Also with the new CBA, performance bonuses cannot be used to reach the salary floor.

Boston has gone over the cap with the bonus cushion this year due to Iginla hitting bonuses.

Three real rookies right now:
24 - Colborne - 88 NHL games, 72 of them this year
19 - Monahan - 67 NHL games, all of them this year
21 - Wotherspoon - 12 NHL games, all of them this year
Plus, although not technically rookies:
24 - Bouma - 113 NHL games, 70 of them this year
24 - Byron - 77 NHL games, 43 of them this year
Not to mention the other rookies that have dressed so far this season:
23 - Hanowski - 8 games
22 - Reinhart - 8 games
21 - Baertschi - 26 games
23 - Knight - 7 games
20 - Granlund - 7 games
21 - Agostino - 4 games
24 - Billins - 2 games
22 - Ortio - 9 games

can he play? Can he skate? Is he fast?
Is there some video of this guy somewhere?
and he signed for $1,350,000 per season....doesn't that seem a little much considering we don't know that much about this guy?

I suppose buying a vowel on Jeopardy would be difficult at the best of times. My gameshow aficionado credentials have been appropriately revoked.

i look at it more as filling holes since the system had virtually no players from the 2009 draft. Knight/Jooris and this guy fill that age slot.
