Johnny seems like a nice kid. I don't think he's going to pull such a d*** move ala Schultz. For starters, it seems like he's happy for being drafted at all, that's gotta hold some value.
And by all accounts, the Flames have always treated him very well. For example, didn't the Flames buy him and his family rink side tickets for this years BOS/CGY game? Or when Feaster got canned, Burke made sure that Gaudreu knew we still count on him. Flames have always treated him well.
Plus, there is that hockey aspect. Flames are in a really good position to give him some NHL time.

I doubt it, that would be a major NCAA rules violation.

He could sign with a team right now and make more money on the signing bonus alone then he could probably make working for 2 years. That's before his base salary and the max bonuses he will get.
People really believe this is about getting an education?

Don't know what his course load remaining is like, but if he wanted the degree he could probably get pretty close to finishing it in the summer. Gets his signing bonus, burns a contract year and probably gets close to getting his diploma.

Maybe his mom is interested in taking our vacant GM job? We hire her, Burke is still 'technically' the GM, and then we get a 'graduation' picture of her and JG together signing the contract...i mean diploma.

So, you have nothing then. Just as I thought.
Look, you and a handful of other posters are blowing this whole thing way out of proportion. AT NO POINT in the article does Gaudreau ever talk about his own future. His mom was likely asked, and then offered her opinion about what she would prefer him to do next year. She responded like I think most moms would.
Think about it like this: She knows enough to know that a hockey career is short, can be permanently physically debilitating, and is viable for only the smallest percentage of prospects. We also have reports that Gaudreau is not very scholastic, and it is reasonable to expect that he likely would not otherwise pursue a college education outside of hockey—certainly not at a school with the same pedigree as BC.
As a mom, OF COURSE she wants the surety of a college degree for her son. OF COURSE she is concerned about his future as a professional hockey player without a college degree. OF COURSE she understands that despite all his skill and his acclaim, he is still a long-shot to succeed as a career NHL player.
She is talking like a mom. NOT Gaudreau. NOT his agent. NOT anyone else but a concerned parent who only wants her kid to be healthy and happy.
All that to say that you are badly misinterpreting what is being said in this article.

I love that Johnny's mom is thinking she is looking out for him, but she needs to look at he big picture. Johnny is a communications major, which means he doesn't have a lifetime of big pay checks staring him in he face. He has an opportunity to make more money in his first contract than he will in 10. The family needs to realize that the 10 year average for comm majors is $72k, if you find a good job. The brass ring only comes around so often. He should take a shot at it while it is there. Opportunity to make the NHL at his position will never be better than right now. Flames depth on LW gives him an immediate path to the show. Silly to pass that up.

Was about to post something similar.
That is something that 99% of all mom's would respond when asked the same question.
Of course she is not going to say "While I think he has proven all he can prove at the NCAA level and it is time for him to move on to the NHL and sign a contract with the Calgary Flames."
Also kind of sounds like an article where you can tell that she is still trying to convince him to stay, but his mind may already be made up.

Is Johnny hockey even allowed an agent in College? Stupid question... But with all the other rules that the NCAA have, is assume they wouldn't be allowed to have one.

Maybe he can work for the FAN960 for extra credit selling advertising. Probably could star in them himself.

Are you seriously going to lecture someone you have never met about how she should be advising her own son about his future?
Please. As if the Gaudreaus don't know a thousand times better than you or any one of us the stakes in their son's decision here.

High ranking college athletes are allowed personal "advisors", who are basically agents by proxy.

They are allowed family advisers... which are technically the same thing just they don't sign a contract of representation.

We do have an ace in the hole. Kenny Agostino is one of his best friends. The conspiracy nuts should look toward sneaky Lou and the Devils tampering, if you are into that sort of thing.

Dear Johnny's Mom,
He can finish his degree in the summer and still get his picture in the Cap and Gown. His year 1 signing bonus even after taxes will be more then double the semester cost of tuition at BC and that's on top of his wage at the AHL level (assuming he even plays there).
With Regards,
Calgary Flame Fans
