Brodie > Russell, quite easily, imo.

For sure. If Brodie improves his offensive game to the level of Giordano's then he will be a top D man. Russell is good but he loses board battles too often

no contest - and I like Russell

IMO, Brodie is the most under-rated player on the Flames, along with Stajan

When Duncan Keith was a first or second year player, I'm sure fans would have argued to name me another team besides Chicago where Duncan would be a top pairing defenseman.

I don't know if Brodie will ever fully develop the offensive game, but he is so far ahead of Ian White in terms of skating and how he defends. I really do believe that he's developing into a player who could slot as a 2-3 defenceman on pretty much any NHL team. He's starting to remind me of Teppo Numminen with how he plays. Mobile defenceman who had okay size, but was one of the best positional defenceman to play in the league over the last 30 years.

I don't want to derail, but I think Wotherspoon is more of a Teppo Numminen comparison than Brodie is.

I think the Keith comparison is a good one (if still ab it lofty at this point)

IIRC it was widely rumored that the Brodie camp wanted to sign long term and it was Feaster/Weisbrod that decided to go the short term route.....probably another glaring error that contributed to Burke giving them the punt. Cap room is going to be at a premium as this team moves out of the rebuild over the next 2-3 years. I'd much rather have the team overpaying (maybe) Brodie this season if it meant we have a top pairing defender on the books likely in the 4M range long term at this point.

Hindsight is always 20/20, however, Brodie was already trending up big time last season so there was really next to no risk in going long term imho.

How so?

This team has nothing but cap room and very few of the current players are at a level that would have them eating up a bunch of cap room unexpectedly...no?

How often do you see players who are given big contracts for future potential level off or regress? Handing a young player big money too soon is not exactly a great motivator to keep improving. Look at the Oilers if you need plenty of examples of too much money at an early age.

Dallas
New York Islanders
Tampa Bay Lightning
Detroit Red Wings
Buffalo Sabres
Toronto Maples Leafs
Florida Panthers
Ottawa Senators
Colorado Avalanche
I'll play
Dallas - Daley, maybe Goligoski too.. Arguable.
NYI - none have an all around game like Brodie.
Tbl- Hedman obviously, hard to think of anyone else that have the complete package like Brodie
Detroit- Kronwall, Ericsson.
Buffalo- none.
TML- I want to say Phaneuf but I think Brodie is better in his own end and has better hands/ hockey IQ. Heck, may even skate better.
Brodie is a much more complete player than Gardiner also.
Fla- Kulikov, perhaps equal in terms of upside but I think Brodie is further ahead in development.
Ottawa- Karlson is better, obviously. But who else?..
Avs- Barrie is developing nicely but isn't as far along and isn't as complete.
Johnson.. Perhaps equal when EJ is on top of his game, which is rare at times.
Brodie is more consistent.
