Does anyone think Kipper might of influenced the flames to bring him back over? He would have a wealth of knowledge about ortio. After all He owns the team ortio played for. Most likely they were going to let him come back for a second Chance any way.
I would think it would be the other way if anything and Kipper would have influenced Ortio to come over to NA.
My guess is as you said the team would have liked to see what they had in Ortio and easier for them to do that with him playing in NA than over in Europe.
I have a faint memory that Kipper kinda influenced the draft group to draft Ortio. I might be making things up, but somehow I remember something like that.

Yap, I too heard that Kipper recommend Ortio to be picked up in the draft.
Pretty cool, as a kid Ortio was around the team when Kipper was in Turku.
Ending up playing for the same team in Finland and Canada.
Having the same goalie coach and emulating Kipper, has led to the same style, attitude, etc.
Kipper 2.0
The kid is a bust. I mean he let in a goal....I thought he'd at last go 2 games without giving up a goal.....
I don't care what they do with him at this point, it's just awesome that he's part of the Flames system moving forward. If he stays that's great because he's good but if they send him down to the baby Flames it's good too because he'll help them win too. Ultimately I don't think he can stay up unless you find a trade for one of the other guys. Either way, we're dealing from a position of strength!

I'm sure that this was posted before but I think it is hilarious...no idea what he is saying but Ortio seems to be quite a character. Hopefully, he will do a Hartley impersonation soon.
Found a little more on the Kipper/Ortio connection. Looks like he used to practice with Kipper, and Jamie McLennan was visiting Kipper in Finland, and that's where the introductions seemed to have occurred.
Can anyone give me a quick run-down on Ortio, or more specifically, answer my question?
I haven't seen either (or is it 3?) of Ortio's games so far, as they've been around 2-3 in the morning. I saw the highlights of his first game (side question: is there anyone/anywhere online that puts up a whole replay of Flames games? Anyway...) and there were some pretty ridiculous saves; including the diving about from one side of the crease to the other.
The first thing I thought was 'looks the same as Berra', which led me to think - and ask - is Ortio's positioning similar to Berra's, meaning that the reason he has to make these highlight-reel saves is because of, well, bad positioning?
Not sure if this has been asked/covered in other topics, but would appreciate some clarity. Cheers.
Nope - Ortio has generally great positioning and rebound control. The highlight reel saves were because of weird puck bounces or great plays and/or pressure by the opposition.
I want to stay away from the Kipper comparisons, but he was also a guy with really good fundamentals, but who also never gave up on a puck, so he'd transition from being a wall like Giguerre in the old huge pads days into a Gumby like Hasek.

I'm no goalie coach but IMO, his positioning is really sound - always square to the shooter, his rebound control is impressive for his age, he is good at tracking and smothering loose pucks (much better than last year), and he doesn't seem to get shaken by bad goals (Kipper blood).
