by my quick calculations, with Wideman out and Wotherspoon in (assuming no other changes), that would make the Flames the youngest team in the league at 26.08 years

8 Draft picks and 3 guys who played their first pro games in the Flames organization (Gio, Knight, Hanowski).
At the start of the season, I predicted that every player drafted in 2011 would play at least a game for the Flames this year (with the possible exception of Gaudreau because of the timing of the end of his season). Brossoit was traded away, but otherwise, the prediction is looking good. If Gaudreau's season ends early, there's a chance it will be all of them.

I wonder who he'll get paired up with. Probably end up playing less than 10 minutes with maybe Smid or Butler.
Being that it was Wideman who went down, I'm surprised it wasn't Billins who was called up, given the philosophy of replacing an offensive-oriented defenseman with another from the farm. Not complaining that it was Wotherspoon called up, because I think it will be good to give him a taste, just something I noticed.

Flames roster page says he will wear #56.
That may be normally true but the Flames have an unbalanced defence with 4 offensive defencemen. Ideally I think we need a defensive minded defenceman paired with each offensive defenceman. I'm not saying Giordano and Brodie aren't good at the defensive side but if they were paired with a defensive defenceman, they could take more chances.
That's to come in the future though with Wotherspoon. As you say, he'll probably be paired with Smid and get 5 to 10 minutes of ice time.
Cautiously optimistic. Lets not forget Cundari looked solid at the end of last year and now is basically done with the organization. Sven stuck in the AHL.
I hope Max, Knight, Granlund and Wotherspoon can cement their jobs for next year.
The impressive part of the Flames call ups is that they actually step in, contribute, and don't look out of place. The Oilers and their uber collection of prospects can't say that. The Flames have continued to select or trade for players with a combination of good skills but long on character. These kids continue to over-achieve at each level they play at. Still a ways to go, but the team is starting to show promise.
