I wonder how many times Calgary appears in NTC lists. Good hockey culture but crap arena which just got flooded. Not going anywhere in standings for a few years.

Probably quite a bit just because we aren't very good at the moment, but I highly doubt the arena being old and flooded would play any part in that choice. Just because Fenway is old doesn't stop players from signing with the Red Sox.

Vancouver - Hate the city, hate the fans, hate the team.
Edmonton - Organization is run like a joke. Not a fan of the city either.
Detroit - Not a big fan of the team, hate the city. Trending downwards too.
Dallas - Don't like the state. Team isn't bad but I don't want to live in Texas.
Montreal - I don't speak a lick of French, and while that doesn't slow other players down, it would bug me being in a province that primarily speaks another language.
New Jersey - Team is old and trending down. Not much in the pipeline for the future.
Phoenix - Don't like their style off play and the future doesn't look very bright for them.

Edmonton - obvious
Columbus - boring team, boring city, lucky to be moved out of a difficult western conference
Buffalo - going to suck for a long time
Winnipeg - would gladly be a Jet but don't overly want to live there
New Jersey - this team is old and they don't have much help coming, and I've never forgiven them for revolutionizing the trap and playing snooze-fest hockey
Phoenix - same thing as NJ in I hate the way they play and I hate that they even have a team there still, it will fail for 5 more years before they finally give up on Glendale
Nashville - unless they trade Weber or Jones I don't think they will ever have a balanced team, they lack offensive forwards and will likely tread water, like they have been, and never address needs
What is your list?
|
Disagree on Columbus, As a team they have a lot going for them in the next few years, as a city it might not be the big apple but if I were a millionare hockey player with a young family it would be near the top of my list.
If you have ever been there it looks similar to Calgary...only the river winding it's way next to down town is nicer!

New Jersey: I would question onwership there.
Phoenix: Again not crazy about the ownership
Nashville: Doubts about ownership ever spending for a true top flight team
New York Islanders: Wang is too crazy as an owner
Edmonton: Owner has a weird crush on Kevin Lowe
Ottawa: Not playing for an owner who hires a forensic investigator, and has his long serving captain walk as a free agent.
Minnesota: Owner spends 180 million on two players and than cries poor? Whats he going to do next try to sell to the billionaire du jour who wants to move the team?
Really I would be fine to live in any of these cities. Contract term would be a factor. For one year or one and a half years, I would go anywhere. But if I had more than that I would be a bit choosier about avoiding places where I think the owner is cheap and or crazy.

Replace Phoenix with Buffalo and it's a perfect list.

If I was playing and had a NTC I would be willing to play for any team where I had a chance to win a cup. I would not waive for a non-playoff team or a fringe playoff team.
Unless I was an Oiler, then I would waive to go absolutely anywhere else.

Edmonton - Horrible organization, bad climate and boring city.
Calgary - Yes I am Flames fan, but with other cities as options, this would not be a placed Id want to play. Maybe for my last year of the career. Boring city and a bad climate play key factors.
Winnipeg - Just not a city Id want to play in, weather is bad and too small of a place. Boring city compared to the other options.
Ottawa - Weather and size of the city. Not a bad place in the summer, but I wouldnt spend summers there anyways. Boring city compared to the other options.
Florida - Merely because Id want to win, so the chances of that in the interim are very low.
Buffalo - Weather and the state of the franchise, even with an owner who is willing to spend, seems like its a gong show.

I would assume that Calgary would be in the top of the No Trade list for most players. The team hasn't been competitive (in the cup conversation) since the 80's. From a weather stand point it would be one of the coldest in the league. If you're from Europe, the US, or Eastern Canada you probably think Calgary is in the middle of nowhere, small and boring. Married players would probably have a very tough time convincing their wifes to move to the middle of the snow covered prairie when there are options like Florida, California, Chicago, or New York.
