Because he's a skilled top two line type player that doesn't really play the type of game to be suited for a grinding line. He's outperformed Baertschi this year. He's 15th in points in the minors and tied for 4th in goals. He's 3rd in rookie scoring and 1st in rookie goals.
Why wouldn't you play him on one of the top two lines?

I'm not saying I wouldn't. I'm saying why would HARTLEY.
He's pretty into guys earning their roles. Granlund hasn't earned anything but a shot.

I really like the idea of Granlund-Backlund-Jones a lot. Reason being that developing young talent on a line together is an amazing idea, and that's a very well balanced line if they could all reach their potential. Skill, defensively responsible and some good size for the corners. I'd love to see that tried for a few months eventually to see if they can gel. Then get a line of Baertschi-Monahan-? and you could develop 2 future lines together a few years down the road.

Well his play in the minors this year would be why he's earned a chance at a top two line role.

Heat Hockey HQ weighs in on Granlund's move:
Granlund Recalled to Flames
The short version, "give us back our leading scorer and starting goalie!"
The long version is a little more of what I've seen of him this year.

It's the same argument we all made for baertschi and backlund... They will only succeed when put in a position to play their game. Hopefully he gets a top 6 opportunity.

Seems crazy, but if you want to see what he has to offer, he needs to play a scoring role. Otherwise a guy like Bancks or Reinhart would be a better bet.

Maybe we're just seeing the third line differently.
I agree he should have a more offensive role to be successful, but he shouldn't be depended upon in the classic 1st/2nd line role.
Even Monahan hasn't been in that role for the better part of the season.

I have a feeling after the trade deadline we will see a few players brought up and this is probably an advanced look at Granlund. I hope he gets a chance to play but Hartley seems reluctant to give the call ups much ice time at least initially.

count me in for hoping he doesn't get buried on the fourth line. would like to see him with bouma on the third to start, maybe with a vet like stajan in the middle. if he can show some defensive responsibility, would love to see him get some time with monahan or backlund in the middle and see if any chemistry develops!

Thanks for that.
Is he really 5'10 163? I didn't realize he was such a little guy

No, that's wrong. He's 6'0.
Edit: or.... 5'11. I'm confused. Seen differing measurements.

They play the Oilers before the Wild though. Mikael might have to settle with seeing Markus' 4th or 5th NHL goal.

You'll notice on some of his goal highlights you don't even see the puck until it's sitting in the back of the net. It's why I pegged him to earn a promotion by this season's end.

Now we're talking about Brett Hull? I thought this thread was about Granlund.

Didn't say that. I'm just saying that, he has one of the quickest releases I've ever witnessed personally. Doesn't make him hall of fame worthy. That's just one aspect of his game. And his release IS insane.
But by all means, blow it out of proportion..

hockeydb.com tends to have heights/weights closer to their draft year for young players.
On abbotsfordheat.com (which SHOULD have an annually updated height/weight) they have him at HEIGHT: 6’0” WEIGHT: 184 lbs.
It's anyone's guess, but i'm going to say it's closer to Abby's number than the one I have posted in my article.
Hilariously, the flames website is displaying both heights and weights on the same page: http://flames.nhl.com/club/news.htm?...id=DL|CGY|home
