Laser headlights are just the latest bit of high-tech to help drivers see further at night and make the roads safer. LEDs already offer several advantages in terms of light output and energy use, and lasers simply take that a step further.

When BMW’s petrol-electric i8 sportscar goes on sale next year in SA as the first production car to use laser lights as an option, its illuminated range will be 600 metres – double the range of LED lights.

Laser lights have far lower consumption than LEDs and they’re also a lot more compact; to get the same illumination from LEDs the diodes would have to be around ten times larger than they are now.

There are some awesome Halogen upgrades you can get, but because they are not blue uninformed ricer D-bag has no interest. He wants the world to think his totally 1337 1996 Civic DX came with factory Xenons.

Factory Xenons, factory designed to fit the vehicle on the other hand, once you have them, you will NEVER go back, they are absolutely amazing. You basically never have to use high beams ever again. I believe like ABS and Airbags, eventually Xenon lights will be a government requirement they are that damn good. If there is ever a check box or a package to get them in when you are buying a new car, check it, they are worth every penny.
Automatic levellers aren't the problem, it's the people that don't even bother to even level or focus the beam. If anyone is getting blue ones they're obviously a ricer regardless, and completely missing the point and don't understand what light is the brightest.

I love me a proper retrofit.... unfortunately that represents about 5% of HIDs on the road. 100% agreed on everything else you said though.

I did a retrofit with some supposedly cheap projectors/ballasts from China. The bulbs are proprietary I guess I have not seen them for sale separately, but the projectors with bulbs are about $60 so really who cares. Very pleasantly surprised by the quality, they are 4300K and look about that, a nice white light just hinting at blue, although I prefer light getting into the more yellow territory myself. The high beams are incredible.

If I had to do anything different I would have gone with orange or maybe blue halos instead of white. Here's what they look like, the entire kit was $140-ish very happy with how it turned out.

Spoiler!

Even the worst, cheapest crappiest $10 eBay halogen projector is going to be far less of a hazard then HID in stock reflector housing.

According to the rules, any retrofit is technically illegal as it's not OEM (even if it's an OEM projector being retrofitted that you can prove is properly aimed) so... we'll have to wait and see how this plays out.

I had mine retrofitted by a buddy who does them as a side job. He used high end parts, and projectors from a lexus light set he had. When they are levelled, and don't have the d-bag intensity, I think they're pretty slick.

I agree though. Lots of people don't know how to do them right, and end up putting the bulb in the halogen housing. Dangerous and ugly.

A bunch of rednecks here do this to their pickup trucks that are lifted too. So they blind the piss out of you making me want to run them off the road. At least their mud tires and lift kit will get used for the correct purpose
