People who use a drug regularly develop a tolerance for it; that is, they require larger doses to get the same effects. Just as quickly, tolerance can diminish. After even a brief period of abstinence, which often takes place in detox, rehab or prison, the brain becomes less accustomed to -- or less tolerant of -- the presence of drugs. As a result of this increased sensitivity, if an addict goes back to the same dose they used prior to rehab, they are at high risk of fatal overdose.
Overdose is a major cause of deaths in heroin users. In contrast to amphetamines, the doses for recreational heroin use and the doses that cause death by respiratory depression have a small window of difference. Also, overdose and death are more common with heroin use than any amphetamine use.
Love Liza is a film anyone who liked PSH should see.

He has previously struggled with drugs. I'm all about not jumping to conclusions, but I don't think it's unreasonable to assume it was overdose considering what the police found in the room.

Hoffman made each and every movie he was in worth watching. Even the silly movies, like "Along Came Polly", which I like watching only because of him in there.
In my opinion his best performance, and will one day gain major cult status. I think the movie was so difficult to understand, that it didn't get the attention it deserved. I have watched it 3 times, and I still am having trouble piecing it all together. But it is an incredibly deep film, that will change the way you look at things. One of the few films that has really moved me. Definitely a great film to seek out if you are a fan of his.

Not that it really matters, but how does this effect The Hunger Games series? Guess they'll need to retool just like Fast and Furious without Paul Walker.
Odd source, being Hollywood Reporter via IGN, but...
Quote:
Hoffman had completed his work for Part 1, and had only seven days remaining to shoot on The Hunger Games: Mockingjay -- Part 2. Sources say the films' scheduled release dates of Nov. 21, 2014, and Nov. 20, 2015, respectively, will not be affected by Hoffman's death
Will be a decidedly odd experience watching the movie knowing of his demise and apparent cause. And on that:
Quote:
Hoffman has struggled with drug abuse in the past and reportedly checked himself into rehab last year (13) to battle an addiction to heroin after 23 years of sobriety.
One of my favorite actors. Anything he was in instantly had credibility in my eyes. He always fully embodies his characters and never worried about not getting enough screen time. He plays the coach in Moneyball and it's a small role that isn't the focus of the film, but his portrayal is essential to so much with the other characters, plot, and themes, just as an example. The guy was an incredible professional and often unheralded. He had so much left in him and it's such a tragedy that he died so young. He was a true master of his craft. I never knew about his problems with addiction and this came as a major surprise to me today.
I'm incredibly saddened by this news, and not every celebrity death affects me very much. RIP PSH.

The Master, Capote, and Synechdoche, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, and The Savages are my top five favorites of his, but so brilliant in everything that he's done. I can't decide if I'm more sad that he's gone or pissed off that he would do that to himself. He always struck me as someone who had it together and had a really balanced, focused perspective on life.
