Nice to see that progress is being made in truly ending probation. Gonna hurt the small liquor stores for sure though.

In December I was in Seattle and went to the Metropolitan Market near Key Arena. They had a huge selection of beers, with many of them being craft beers. The guy working the section was excellent and pointed us to a bunch of beers we had never heard of before. We picked up a 12 pack, but the best part was, they were all singles and each was a different brand. Every beer they sold there was available in a single bottle, and there was no up charge for breaking a case. It was a better selection than most bars and many liquor stores and the most expensive bottle was $1.33. The Safeways down there are also stocked with similar selections, although it is tougher to break cases there.

Good for BC. The system we have currently in Alberta is good by Canadian standards - only Quebec is better - however it is still far too restrictive. I would like to see the following liberalization of drinking enacted:

- Allow alcoholic beverages to be sold in grocery stores, convenience stores, and essentially wherever else food is sold. A no brainer.
- Allow drinking in outdoor public spaces, parks, sidewalks etc. End the beer garden segregation at festivals.
- Privatize the distribution system.
- Remove the stipulation that licensed restaurant patios have a 2 foot fence around them, there's no need for it.
- Remove closing time restrictions. Allow the market to determine the hours at which bars will be open, if there's demand for all-night drinking then so be it. I think this would cut down on violence with all bar patrons currently spilling on to the street at 2 am, and it would also ease the taxi crunch by having staggered closing times.

Liquor laws in Canada are still some of the most restrictive in the (western) world which is strange considering how liberal we are as a society.

^ Don't forget to allow liquor stores to be open as late as someone is looking to buy something, and also, get rid of that 'no sale of alcohol on Christmas' BS.

Down here all the grocery stores sell beer and wine, and usually have a pretty good selection of both. It's damn convenient. You still have to go to the liquor store for the hard stuff, but the beer selection at the liquor store is usually about the same as at the supermarket.

Really hope this gets implemented in Alberta too.

Really? Is this a recent thing? I can think of at least one that I bought liquor from on X-mas day, granted many years ago now.
