It looks like there is going to be another protest here in Calgary. Calgary Animal Rights Effort has a closed group (you have to apply to join) on Facebook. We always need more bodies and this is something a lot of Albertans feel very strongly about. I can always talk about this via pm if anyone wants to know any more.

I don't know enough about the topic to feel one way or the other.
I am always open to PM discussions.
Thanks for you response(s).

I would never eat horse but what difference is there between a horse and a cow? Serious question. Do horses feel more pain when killed? If people want to eat horse I don't see what the problem is.

Do you feel the same about cat, dog, raccoon?
I am the same as you, I have no issue with it, but I wonder if/where people draw the line on what animals are acceptable.
PS: to this day I swear I ate horse in france at a pub in 1993

I think it's nasty but there are people who think eating any type of animal is nasty, including cows, so I don't have a problem with people eating any kind of animal they want. As long as they are killing it as humanely as possible.
I've yet to have someone answer that question. Why are horses treated different? Is there scientific proof they feel more pain or is it because kids are conditioned that horses are lovable animals we ride in the prairies. I've tried to figure out one good reason why horses shouldn't be eaten and I can't think of one.

I don't want to look as though I have hijacked this thread but a few quick answers to questions asked above.
My preference would be for people to stop the excessive breeding that currently occurs. There are way too many horses and not enough homes. You do the math.
Firstly, there is no such thing as humane slaughter. Even Temple Grandin designed slaughter houses. Animals can smell blood and can sense fear. Many animals are not stunned correctly before they are hoisted by their hind legs to have their throat's cut. Their heart's have to be beating when their throats are cut so that they bleed out properly. I have this same conversation many times over and not one (yes, not one) person thought animals were slaughtered in this manner. They seem to think they walk happily into the abattoir and somehow end up happily packaged as meat at the other end.
I am a lifelong horsey girl. Horses have been my passion for over 50 years. They are the noblest of animals; they have stood alongside mankind; toiled with them; carried them across continents; marched with them into war; given joy and companionship. That should exempt the horse from being viewed as food.
I wish no animals were ever subjected to the slaughter house. I am vegan.

Which I don't think anyone said. I specifically said "as humanely as possible". I understand you can't have a humane slaughter. All you can do is try to limit the pain and suffering.

You're right, all animals are subject to some pretty bad conditions when being killed, but I still fail to see why people are protesting only Horse slaughters. I think the answer is pretty simple. And it has a lot to do with your next quote.

This is why I think people are against eating horse but it still isn't a good enough reason to not eat a perfectly good animal.

Suzles, was your group protesting on McKnight near the south end of the airport a few of months ago? I remember driving through there wondering what was going on, but barely made out something about horses, but nothing else. If so, I'd recommend bigger signs. I honestly drove though there thinking it was a strike of some kind, but a little farther from the postal sorting facility than normal.
I admire your dedication to something that is close to your heart. Just a friendly suggestion.

I think everyone should know where their meat comes from and how it gets from the farm to your plate. Once people are educated if they still want to eat meat, good on them. I truly believe that by the end of my lifetime, most people on the planet (maybe even myself) will be vegetarian or vegan and rates of animal slaughter will drastically fall.
That being said, for now, I love meat - and not to sound insensitive to the matter at hand but does anyone know how to go about acquiring said horse meat? I tried to buy some in Toronto a couple summers ago but the place I tried was sold out for the day.
Oh and Milan Papez is a total nutbar.

I would like to try horse, I dont see the difference between it and a cow. But then I really dont have issues with people that eat dog. For me humane as possible treatment and as humane of death as possible.
One thing I think goes undiscussed is that if everyone was vegan Pigs, Cows, and chickens would cease to exist. So a question I always come back to is some life better than no life? Personally, I would rather live until I am 30, and then get shot in the back of the head rather than have never lived. In some ways the Bargain our meat animals made have made them the most successful in an evolutionary sense in getting their genetic material past on

i'm guessing finding horse meat that isnt full of hormones and chemicals like most horses kept makes this profitable.
I remember that being a problem back in europe anyway, lots of vet drugs are NOT designed for the food chain.
Anyways if you want to get into it we have always historically eaten horses - out here before the railway was built it certainly wasnt unknown.

Cow, horse, dog, cat, I really don't see the issue with any of it. If you mark one species of animal as suitable for consumption, how can you arbitrarily decide that a different species should be exempt? The issue I have is treatment, like places in Asia where dogs and cats are skinned alive. Or Japan, that continues to hunt endangered whale species

Looks like Milan Papez is now free and back. Saw him a couple days in a row at the corner of 6th ave and 2nd street.
But...he does not speak anymore. He says quiet as he tries to give you his pamphlet. I guess he learned his lesson haha.

He says "QUIET!" or he stays quiet? LOL. I can totally imagine a lunatic telling other people to be quiet while he hands out his hate literature.

Stays** haha. If you look at his face, you can tell he's holding it back and trying not to spew his crap verbally. It's quite hilarious and sad at the same time.
