This happens on forums without Thanks too. Anyway, if you think this place has it bad, you only have to go a popular sub-reddit to see how easily any relevant discussion dissolves into karma whoring by the masses obsessed with getting the most upvotes possible through one-liners. At least I can trust on people to try and continue discussions here.
PGTs would have tons of animated gifs regardless of if there was Thanks or not, I think.

Considering I haven't mentioned posters "i can't stand", I don't think I'm the one projecting.
As for an idea, I'll restate my original one as it seems to have been lost:
Why not remove 'Thanks' altogether?

Sorry but I understand your point and to a minimum extent agree, but it would mean much more if it came from a different poster.
You abuse the thanks system just as much as anyone. And that's not to say I don't either but at least I don't come across looking like a hypocrite and argue for it to be gone. If someone quotes a post of mine with a one liner and whether it is right or wrong, relevant or not relevant, you're the first guy to thank that post. That's not what the thanks system is for. It's not for picking a poster you don't like and thanking any post that quotes them with "one liners, and de-railment" You're the first guy to thank a one liner aimed at me, and undercoverbrother is the next poster to thank it.
So please don't sit here and lecture the board on what is wrong with the thanks system until you stop abusing it as well.

I don't look at the Thanks stats but I do enjoy using the Thanks button. As long as that stays, I'm happy.

I could write 200 words expressing how happy I am that so and so scored and how great the team played, but it's probably been covered in the GT thread. So, for PGT, I let my GIFS do the talking for me.
I actually think the GIFS in the PGT are super fun. I get a good laugh seeing some that other people post. Especially when people make their own, and double especially when theirs are inferior in quality to my ghetto versions. I do mine to make people laugh, not necessarily for the thanks.
Now pardon me while I choose which GIF to use for after this game...

I like the Gif's in the PGT.
I think they would be better if they were spoilered in each post, but that's a minor nitpick.
I don't think "Thanks" contributes much to people posting pictures.
Mostly, I feel bad for Fotze. Guy used to be king of the one line castle, now everyone's on his turf scooping up the low hanging fruit. He must be devastated.

The thanks give me a reason to potentially read a 500 word opinion. Otherwise I would probably just gloss over it.

Yep, this is why thanks is huge for me on this site. I know the unfunny, serious posters hate it because they think it makes everyone a comedian, but it's true awesomeness is while quickly scrolling through all the threads in the FOI forum.
You can read 9 or 10 very well written, worth while posts in 3 or 4 various threads in short order by following the large accumulation of thanks.

Nah, if you see his posts over the years, he ditched the low-hanging fruit a long time ago. He posts how he posts, and it's changed over the years, I would highly doubt it has to do with other people making jokes.

There were too many "I agree" type posts, but there are still too many posts where people post things just to post. Go into any recent signing thread and you will have to scroll through a couple pages of people posting "Great signing" "Wow good signing" etc.
CP needs to do the anti-twitter and impose a minimum character count.

ok
Edit: didn't expect that to work lol
To contribute to this thread, I don't see any reason to ditch the thanks function. I don't care if we bring back the stats page but I like thanking posts and if I'm skimming through a thread it's nice to know which ones are worth stopping for and reading

Thanks are working as it should and I see no reason to bring back individual records of thanks given per person.
