#Flames Backlund on Jones tussle: "He was just being a hero all night in front of the net. I'm not going to take anything from that guy."
I mentioned in the GT that I like Backlunds aggression lately. He really does seem like a player that needs a chip on his shoulder to play his best hockey. For that reason I love quotes like this from him. Play angry and play cocky Backs!

Let us not forget that it wasn't that long ago that he was watching games from the press box.
I hope the guy has turned the corner, but until we see a much longer sample size, I'm not convinced.

He still plays a soft game, hoping he continues to put up points and can be moved eventually, but not for a late pick, but as part of a deal to bring in a top prospect or high pick.
Getting rid of Stajan to make room for him is silly, he had this "room" early this year and did nothing with it. If we move or don't move Stajan - it should solely be because it makes sense because of the return.

Well he was second star against Pittsburgh and scored against them too. Didn't see that game but I've heard he was our best player. Played 22 minutes.

It wasn't long ago that Steven Stamkos was being benched. Being benched doesn't mean squat about the NHL future of a player.

One game.
Your buddy Curtis Glencross was a healthy scratch at one point a couple seasons ago too. Plenty of day-to-day NHL players get sat at times. Cory Sarich was a multiple scratch for the Flames the last couple seasons, pretty sure he's an NHL player.

The good: Backlund
The bad: Stajan (stupid stupid stupid penalties and useless play), Wideman (what happened to this guy, slow, giving it away, never getting the shot through... pathetic)
Once again the young guys play well and the vets suck the big one.

You must have missed the reports that several teams were calling the Flames about Backlund. He will never be a star but he does all the little things right and is emerging as a leader. Backlund will have a long career in the NHL. Teams are always looking for a defensively responsible center who can pot the odd goal.
|
If he keeps this up, Backlund could quietly turning into Yelle 2.0. No way you trade this guy for a pick not in the top ten of a mediocre draft at this point.

Yea, Dreger said the Flames were shopping Backlund and that Carolina was one of the teams that made an offer for him.

Mikael Backlund has consistently been one of, if not our best possession players all season long. We take more shots when he's on the ice, that is an undeniable fact, and a hugely valuable one.
After Giordano, he's the MVP of the Flames, has been over the course of the whole season, and - in terms of possession stats - has not experienced any significant slumps. He is exactly the kind of player we need to have if we ever expect to be successful Trading him for anything short of a top-3 pick would be lunacy.
Prediction: Backlund will be a lock for the 2018 Swedish Olympic team.

Well Cp never fails to deliver. We finally have a player that we developed ourselves, playing well, potting a few goals along the way and all we can do is bash him saying the sample size is too small and he was in the press box previously.
When do we cut a prospect a break and enjoy when one of them starts to do well rather than looking for the next opportunity for him to fail.
