They're Android phones, so they can use Hangouts (you could do it with iPhones and use iMessage, too) to text over wifi. When my daughter gets home from school she is supposed to text me how her day was, and I text her back how mine is going.

We tried everything to get her interested in reading and writing and nothing was working particularly well for the longest time. Texting completely changed that for her and us. Now she enjoys reading, reads books, etc. and it's been really neat watching her abilities improve over the months we've been texting by looking through our history. I turned off predictive text and make sure to always write to her in complete sentences (versus abbreviated 'text speak').

Anyway, back to the thread, but just wanted to point out cell phones are a great tool for kids when used properly.
Pets are great for kids too.

You do realize none of that involves writing?

You don't read when you read a text?

You don't write when you write a text?

I don't get what you're saying.

Writing to me is using a pen and paper, either printing or cursive.

He's going for the Zimmerman

Writing is composing a written message, it doesn't necessarily involve putting a pen or pencil to paper. You can write with a keyboard or smartphone.

Fair to say it can mean a number of things depending on the reader....

You can type with a keyboard or a smartphone. You can't write with either. This an argument over semantics.

So novelists ceased being writers once they started using typewriters or computers for their works? We should only call them typists from now on?

How long do you think the texts are..........

I read it from in the context of 5 yr old and 7 yr old in school, where the act of writing with a pen and paper is still done. Although, even that is dying out. We could start another thread on that, or we can continue to derail this bad boy.

It's a good thing we're debating the differences between "writing" and "typing/texting" on the internet. If this debate were done in person . . . somebody would get shot.

What general term do you use to describe authors, newspaper/magazine journalists, and other similar professionals? (Edit: I see nfotiu already made this point above.)

I'm composing this post on a keyboard. If you don't call that activity "writing", then what term do you use instead?

I'm thinking of making a career change to become a technical typist. If that doesn't work out, then maybe I'll enter the copytyping field.

I prefer the terms "KeyBanger" or "typeset auter".

Good luck in your career change, March. I myself am considering a change to "technical voice recognition softwarist."
