Subban is there because he has the ability to win the game by himself.

I see Subban being left at home. As mentioned earlier he is not far and away better than some others that could take his place and a short tournament leaves no room for his BS. You need team players and by many accounts PK can be a poor teammate. If that is or can be confirmed then I think he should stay home.

Last impression before the selection for team canada might have been Subban in the box for the OT game winning goal for Ottawa last night.

Not the first time that's happened this season.

Gives me flashbacks of Bertuzzi sitting in the box for the eliminating goal in 2006. Predictably outcome.

So far I view it like the discussions about byfuglien or yandle for team usa. In a short tournament against the best in the world, is subban reliable enough? Have lots of defenders with similar offense and skating and I'm not sure if what he brings displaces those other guys.
Montreal thought he was reliable enough as a rookie to play him in the post-season against Crosby and Ovechkin in back to back series. And they won both of them. He's not worse than he was then. He's way better. He's one of the best defensemen in the game. Leaving him at home is overthinking the situation. He was voted best defenseman in the best league in the world six months ago. He goes, IMO.

Bertuzzi had 71 points in 82 games in 05-06. He was on that team because he was Gretzky's buddy and the prevailing thought was 'you CAN'T take him'. Fresh off the Moore thing, it was a bad decision and the results were, I agree, predictable.

Subban is rambunctious. Which is not the same situation as taking a guy who a year earlier had committed one of the ugliest acts the modern NHL has seen.

Seabrooke isn't quick enough for the big ice. He also didn't impress last Olympics. He shouldn't be selected this time around.

Just as likely he wins it for opposition than Canada. Against the big teams probably more likey.

Yeah I would be awfully wary of picking Subban, even though I ended up picking him. I think he plays as little as possible, and probably spends some time in the press box in Sochi. You play him if you need offensive help throughout the tournament, but I would consider sitting him in elimination games. Although there is so much firepower on the backend already (Kieth, Weber, Pieterangelo, Doughty, and even Bouwmeester) do they even need Subban at all? He honestly doesn't provide much more then Canada already has in spades.

This is the problem. Do you bank on the fact that Subban can accept this role graciously or does he become a distraction that this team just doesn't need.

You're talking about him like he's Terrell Owens... When has Canada had an issue with the players on the taxi squad bitching about playing time? Injuries happen, he'd need to be ready. Though if Seabrook struggles on bigger ice, I know who I'd want coming off the bench to play with Keith...

I'm no Phaneuf lover or anything, but seeing Marc-Edouard Vlasic getting significantly higher votes than him shows plenty of bias, never mind the Giordano love.

I'm a huge no on Subban...he may have great skills but his attitude is all wrong and he lacks character and decision making skills.

I watched the game and the only reason he ended up in the box was because his partner Gorges turned the puck over inside their own blueline.

However, I do think he takes his fair share of penalties.

Should be on the team regardless.

Vlasic is a fantastic player, the perfect player for the final paring or even on the taxi squad. He's gotten much better over the years, and is a better overall defender than Phaneuf imo.

To me the montreal calgary game this year gives me great pause to put Subban on the team. He was the best player on the ice and the worst. He is definately top 8 though so I would bring him but not ice him unless injuries come up.

Is Seabrook better than he used to be? I am not sure. The top 5 are a no brainer but after that you are picking between flawed defensemen.

Kieth Weber
Pieterangelo jbo
Doughty.

Not really sure after that.

I am quite comfortable with the idea of Vlasic playing against the world's elite, especially when paired with another elite defender.

He's a top defender for any nation. I know he is not a shoe in but in my books, he should be, even if as the 7th or 8th guy.

Keith, Weber, Doughty, Pieterangelo, Bouwmeester, Vlasic, Boyle, Subban.

Seabrook could potentially take a spot from Subban or Boyle, but those are the 8 I would select.

People are really undervaluing Vlasic. Absolutely terrific defenseman and he's on the team for sure IMO.

Exactly what I voted.

Gio to me is the best well rounded option for an 8th d-man. Will be able to offer the team a bit of everything, while some other choices are more one dimensional.

and Gio > Vlasic

No way Hamhuis should be on this team. Has been ordinary this year.
