The only way a team claims him is if they're ready for a 5 year development program for him.
He is simply awful right now and always has been. I don't think there is any chance he gets picked up.

He is not steady, steady d-men are not a dime a dozen and don't clear waivers. He shouldn't be a regular NHL d-man, imo.

What does that have to do with Breen? They both should be on waivers but Smith >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Breen.

You mean aside from throwing it up the middle to nobody that led to Philly's first goal, and standing around on a coffee break with no Flyer within 5 feet of him on the third goal? Breen may be going down, but the real gain from Wideman's return is that it pushes Smith to the press box.

Have you been paying attention? He isn't a regular NHL defencemen. He's been scratched pretty much his whole career for stretches.

I was referring to the poster saying he was a bottom pairing d-man.
Bottom pairing d-men are NHL regulars.

Last season (this is prior to his injury), a few of the scouts that came to the Heat games regularly loved him.
I really wish you guys could've seen the pre-injury Breen. Your opinions of him would be much much different.

Whoa, this rates a 9.0 on the Richter scale of inconsequential events.

Pre-injury and AHL Breen.
It may be his injury but to me a lot of problems he had were mental not physcial. Sure it sucks he is a bad skater and easy to skate around but he left a lot of guys alone and was out of position a lot. That shouldn't be affected by an injury.
It may just be the pace/skill of the AHL is a much better fit for him healthy or not.

Must be why the Flames were worries about exposing him to waivers under Feaster

That would be me and I still believe he is. Again, not sure why all the Smith hate. He's a million times better than Breen and I haven't seen him do anything that warrants all the scratches either. Is he perfect, nope, but he is a bottom pairing d-man IMO.

I cant think of one NHL team that would have him as a regular bottom pairing d-man.
Also, not sure what you mean by "Smith hate" I just don't think he's steady or a bottom pairing d-man. All evidence points towards this.

He did leave a lot of guys open, which was a bit of a shock to me. He's a very good shutdown defenseman in the AHL. It's really too bad it didn't translate to the NHL.
Hopefully he'll get another shot one day and hopefully that shot comes after he's completely returned to form.

Well Resolute points out some good points about his play and that is about par for the course for Smith. He is fine as a 7th guy to fill in for injuries and eat popcorn for 75% of the games but he makes way too many mistakes to be in your line-up FT and expect anything positive to come from it.

Don't kid yourself. This has been Burke's team since the day he was hired. If Burke wanted Breen sent down before today, it would have happened.

Well, agree to disagree. I haven't seen a ton of mistakes from him. Always wondered why he wasn't playing more, but then I guess that's why I'm not a coach.

The way I remember Smith is that he had a great first year for us as a 6th, 7th defenceman and than because of injuries he had to fill in on the top 4. He got badly exposed, lost his confidence and has been bad ever since. There's no upside with Smith anymore whereas I was hopping Breen had some upside.

The way I remember Smith is much different.
Basically it boils down to this: Under B. Sutter he was really making strides, but after the coaching change, Hartley just seemed to have no use for him at all.
Smith was solid when first acquired, as a depth D-man.....but with some injuries he got more ice time and, IMO he excelled for a stretch, but then got hurt himself. The rest of that season was a write off, then came the lock out and Hartley.

I dont agree with that at all.
Burke spent much of his time before the firings away from the team, likely assessing the direction and work of his subordinates.
When Davidson was hired in cbj, he apparently was hands off with howson until howson started exploring trades for their first rounders. That was enough to put him in the crosshairs for immediate termination.
Wouldn't surprise me if inperson evaluations of things like Breen not on waivers and potential re-signing pending ufas were part of the impetus to move feaster and weisbrod out of hockey ops.
Look at all the organizational movement since. To me, there is a visible gulf in how the organization conducted business with and without feaster this year.
