He's a drafted Canadian junior player.....the conversation went something like this...."Hey kid, sign this."

I don't know who his agent is but if the agent is anywhere near competent then that conversation probably went different. The Flames probably gave him some sort of assurances that he would have a legit shot to make the team in the next year or two.
Glad to see him signed, excited to see what he can bring.

Nice signing of a future RW with some jam, but I'd be surprised if he made the Flames next season. More likely to play a year or two in the AHL. He may even go back to the Q as he only has three years in major junior.

Agreed. I think Monahan making the team out of camp is getting people's hopes up too high. It's usually 2-3 years after being drafted before late 1st rounders make the big club.

I can't see him going back to the QMJHL, AHL is most likely where he ends up next year.

Good Signing
Emile Poirier has to be the Flames most promising prospect right now.
Johnny Gaudreau being right there as well. Burke needs to get him signed as well.
Johnny is on a 13 game point streak right now.
Five points in his last 2 games.

Poirier looked good enough to earn a 9 game stint this past camp.
If his progression this season says anything, it's that he's a good bet to see time in a Flames jersey next season.
Now, just get Johnny signed and I can finally rest easy.

If Poirier gains a few lbs of muscle and progressively adds to his bulk over the first few years (while allowing his body to adjust slowly as he gets bigger & stronger) he'll be very quickly well respected in the NHL.

I love that he models his game after big body winger Rick Nash

Probably needs a couple years in the AHL to work on his defensive game and learn to not take so many dumb penalties

I agree. We don't want another Sven scenario when CP people and Flames brass thinks he is ready for the NHL right away then when he struggled, some CP people wants to get rid of him. Poirer still need to stay in junior at least another year then maybe one season in AHL. He's got the skill and the speed but he might need some seasoning in his defensive play.

Yes, at least it causes the question to be asked.
If he had waited one more day, Poirier's contract would not slide.
However, by signing on the 31st, now his contract can (and likely will) slide, pushing his second contract back a year, meaning less money earned by his client.
There are three places Poirier could play next year (assuming he isn't traded):
1) the Flames. If so (very unlikely, IMO) his contract would not slide regardless
2) AHL (most likely, IMO) and if so, his contract will slide
3) CHL as an over-ager (very unlikely IMO) where his contract would also slide
Someone mentioned that maybe the Flames offered assurances, but IMO, the agent just failed Poirier badly, likely causing him to wait a year longer to get a 2nd contract because I suspect he plays in the A next year.

Burke prefers to have his prospects play in the AHL first before making the big team so I doubt poirier makes the team even if he has a good camp next year. Remember, kadri had several really good training camps and still took a few years to make the team.

I don't think it necessarily means the agent failed Poirier.
Poirier waiting to sign the ELC at the "11th hour" implies that he had a choice to make.
Burke probably told Poirier that if he signed before January 1st he would get the $832,500 plus $92,500 in signing bonus per year, but if Poirier decided to wait longer to sign the base salary and the signing bonus would decrease after January 1st.
So I think in the end the extra bit of guaranteed signing bonus was enough of an incentive to forgo a possibility of getting a higher payday 3 years from now. Burke may have even hinted that the Flames would take into account that the contract would slide into account during the negotiations for the 2nd contract.

If so, that would definitely be a failure by the agent.
Whatever his contract turns out to be 4 years from now, it will be based on his play, not an obscure promise from 4 years prior
As for the bonus, that was my first thought too, but aren't ELCs very standard in their structure?
