Why would people cheer for Gillies over Canada?
You'll have plenty of time to cheer for Gillies. These tournaments happen once a year.

Best case Gillies plays well and US loses of course.

Eichel has impressed for the Americans. Wouldn't be a bad consolation prize for the team that doesn't get McDavid.

Canada needs to have a two-pass limit in the offensive zone or something. Gillies looks shaky, but they aren't getting any shots through to him.

Off the boards and out.
McDavid and Reinhart with two stupid giveaways because they don't make the simple play.

I just hope these misguided souls remain consistent and cheer for Hudler, Smid, and the Czech Republic in February.

Luckily Fucale is playing great so far, or this would already be out of hand. Really getting out played, which isn't surprising given what's happened in this tourney so far.

Exactly. They happen every freaking year. Meaning that their lustre and pedigree are kind of lost, meaning that it doesn't really matter who wins.
I always start out cheering for Canada but as the tournament progresses I just end up cheering for good-ish games and Flames prospects. I don't see why that's a big deal.

When it comes to international hockey, my heart always remains with Canada, but I have a tremendous soft spot for any Flames property playing in the games. Last year I wanted to see Canada win, but I wanted to see Johhny Hockey play lights out. He did, so I wasn't totally disappointed when USA won.
Same applies today.

This will be a good learning game for Canada win or lose.
They need to play like the Americans are today in order to win. Always moving their feet, making the strong simple plays, finish every check, and win the race to loose pucks.
That last Canadian shift was the perfect example of how they need to play. Win the puck battle, get traffic in front, and shoot from anywhere.

USA really carrying the play in the 1st, but not generating a whole lot of quality chances. Canada with a lot of careless giveaways. Gillies not really tested until the last minute of play. Did give up some bad rebounds early, which he's struggled with a bit this tourney.
Canada really needs to simplify their game if they're going to have a chance in this one. US are winning all the battles and all the races to the puck. 2nd period should be fun.
Go USA!

How does that even make sense? We are cheering for prospects. We already know who we have in full time NHLers so seeing them do good makes no difference.
And besides the Olympics are 1000 times more important than this tournament.

I hope Gillies has a great tournament and a solid game today. However, if the USA wins I'll be as upset when the Flames lose. I'm just not comfortable cheering against my country because of a player who may or may not one day play a game for the Calgary Flames.
