Not sure what everyone is seeing in Draisaitl. Have always thought he was a tad overrated and still do. Has the build and size of Kopitar and offensive skill but he hasn't had a good game against decent competition at all. He's the last guy back on the back check and just seems to be disinterested at times when the play isn't going to result with the puck on his stick. That said those are fixable qualities and he'll still be a good NHLer.
Obviously this game is a very small sample size. Will be interested to see how he progresses as the tournament goes on.
For Canada, Drouin is trying to do too much individually. Needs to just play a team game. Mantha is a good finisher. Sam Reinhart is a very intelligent player. McDavid is an elite talent but not on the level of Crosby, lacks Sid's tenacity and refusal to give up on plays.
Dumba has been the best player on the ice so far.
This is a great first matchup for Canada. The Germans skate well and have forced Canada to bring their legs and quick decision making right away in the tournament. You can tell Canada still lacks chemistry, lots of blind passes to the slot and players not sure where their linemates are going to be on the cycle. But they are working hard, closing on the puck quickly and playing the way they need to given that this isn't a group that can win the gold on talent. Very similar to the 2006 team actually. Nice to see the PP cash in a couple times as they will need it to score some timely goals in this tournament against the good teams.
Still work to do especially in the defensive zone as well - some botched assignments have left Germans wide open in the slot and better teams will taken advantage of that. Faceoffs as well.
Hopefully see a few more goals in the 3rd to keep confidence high. This group needs it.

great game so far. as the tournament moves along the team will gel.
as they mentioned in the 2nd Int, the defence jumping in the rush is a big positive for this team

Sounds like this might be about to get a little rough for the Germans.
I like draisaitl and he would have been a legitimate draft target for us in the feaster days, but there is no way Burke drafts him.

Barber and Butcher score early for USA. Sadly, both Baker and Candlestickmaker were cut at camp.

Is it just me or are the Americans playing like the Canadians should be playing? The Americans are tenacious as hell and actually finish their checks. I really wish the Canadians played more of a "hard" game rather than the continuous flashy, finesse plays that don't work all that often.

The highlights of Can-Ger didn't look all that impressive. I have the USA game on, not much happening after the early USA PP goals early.

Also, this Jack Eichel kid has really impressed me. I wonder where he'll go this draft. He's committed to Boston University this season.

He's in the McDavid draft, right behind him.

he's 2015 draft eligible. That is going to be one hell of a draft ... some nice consolation prices for the teams that don't get McDavid (Jack Eichel, Mathew Barzal, Travis Konecny, Dylan Strome etc).

Canada was slow in the first 10 mins but dominated the last 50 mins.
Could have been much worse of a score if Canada converted their chances or were pushing in the 3rd. Germany had maybe 1 or 2 scoring chances outside of their two goals.
It was a very good game for the first game of the tournament for Canada.

He'll go 2nd at best behind McDavid.
There is some talk about maybe he can challenge McDavid but that always seem to happen with guys who are touted early on as the surefire #1 guy.

Dang. I forgot about Barzal and Konecny. That is going to be a heck of a draft.

I remember when the Czechs were actually competitive at this tournament and a top 4 team.
Now they are closer to the Germany range than the top 5 (Can, Rus, USA, Sweden, Fin).
These last two goals against were pathetic and Norway-esue bad. With little to nothing at the NHL level left Czech hockey does not look like it is in a very good place with a very poor looking future.

Gillies is playing very well. Hasn't faced a ton of rubber, but has had to make a couple key saves in tight.

Way to go, TSN, I've never wanted to punch a small child or an old woman in the face before, but thanks to RBC and Telus, I now do.

Damn, Gillies loses the shutout bid.
"Takes guts to be a goalie. That's all I'm gonna say."
