If they did a 'Mystery Alaska' style game with small attendance on a lake and made it PPV, that would be freaking awesome. Even if they didn't have it as a PPV, the publicity would be crazy.

Sorry, I had to read this over a few times... It's just when I saw Winnipeg and classic in the same sentance, it didn't really make sense.

Knew I should have used green text, was implying that nothing, even something requiring cold weather is good about Winnipeg. I forget how poorly sarcasm translates over text.

Oh well, Winnipeg sucks.

How about LA?

Anyway, it was inevitable that Winnipeg would get one, but still somewhat surprising that all four western teams will host a game before the East.

2016 is interesting too. Does it indicate that the NHL will do a HC every other year?

The outdoor Heritage Classic in the Skydome loses something, but at least Toronto isn't deluded enough to just go with it anyway (Hi, Vancvouver). Montreal doesn't have a suitable facility, unless the NHL doesn't mind debris crumbling onto the playing surface.

Well, the Winter classic was supposed to always be 2 American teams but here comes Toronto anyway.

Jets vs Yotes. Jets with the Classic Jets blues and the Yotes with the Whites.. or if you want to go old school reverse them for a true White out. Rope off a section of empty seats to represent the Phoenix fans.

I don't think that either was ever truly defined that way, but it stands to reason that the NHL doesn't want to crush the American drawing interest of the WC with a "lesser" Canadian team. Toronto or Montreal could pull it off. None of the other five could. The NHL resurrected the HC to give Canadian teams - which were very loudly complaining to the league - an outdoor game of their own. A Phoenix-Winnipeg HC would make a lot of sense because it would still sell big in Canada, and it gives the Coyotes the chance to participate in an outdoor game. We all know that city will never host one and they aren't enough of a draw to be involved in the Winter Classic.

Au contraire.

There is a strong movement afoot in Glendale to host the Winter Classic in conjunction with the 2015 Superbowl.

Dont you kind of have to have 'Winter' first?

Doubt they get the Winter Classic, think they likely would get a stadium series game though (similar to New York this year).

Following the Super Bowl around actually isn't a terrible idea for the NHL to drive some deeper visibility, and pretty much the entire World's sports media is in the Super Bowl city during Super Bowl week.

Have to wonder if they NHL would look at a neutral site Stadium Series game during those years when the Super Bowl is not in an NHL city.

Does the NHL have plans to have games played in Europe anymore? It will be great if they do an outdoor game at Wembley or the Olympicstadion in Berlin or other major soccer stadiums over there.

I think the league will have to evaluate that. I mean, how many of the teams don't effectively have 'Winter'? Do we automatically exlude them forever and just keep it to the northern teams? I don't think the league would want to push for that type of exclusion.

Not to mention the HUGE appeal that a 'winter classic' in Phoenix would have.

Looks like the Heritage Classic will not be played in Winnipeg in 2016. They are hoping to have it in 2017 instead.

OT but, they're giving us the Oilers and Wild? What the ####. I guess the Flames are too good to play preseason games here.

Just because you're stuck in Sasatchewan doesn't mean our team should be subjected to traveling there.
