Nobody throws out metal flash lights. They at least stash them in a drawer.
I second this one. Did some IT contracting work for CNRL about 6-7 years ago, they handed out some metal LED flashlights, and I still use them today.

I think phone chargers would be a good idea. Monoprice sell branded iPhone USB cables with their logo on it for super cheap so I'm sure it could be cost effective. I've got those cables everywhere - in my Jeep, my bedroom, my TV room and my office. And a few more stashed away for when I travel. Never hurts to get another charging cable - and if you include the wall cube I guarantee I'd keep it for as long as it works.

Other things I'd keep around:

Pens
Sharpies
Notepads (Not cluttered up with too much advertising tho)
Grocery bags
GOOD travel mugs

Mind you, I draw a lot of diagrams in my work (we make custom stuff) and the multiple colours come in handy for keeping my pictures clear. But I also like having different colours in my notebook. Blue is my main colour. Red to check off completed items. Green if there is something different/odd that needs to be highlighted. Etc. I get all that versatility in something the same size as a normal poor-man's one-colour pen. Actually, I guess it's slightly bigger than a normal pen, but since I have big hands it's a win-win.

Holy ####, elementary school called they want their pens back

^^^ Yeah the Bluetooth speaker is the hot graft du jour in oil and gas right now. Just be sure to get the quality ones that crank out the volume. That seems to really wow some types over.

It was my first time in Calgary as an adult. My friend and I victoriously found a place to live and it was designed by an interior designer so it was a gorgeuos place to live in. Especially for 2 18 yr olds. We decided to celebrate at the local bar. Our choices were Canadian, Kookanee and K Gold. Being from a back ground of beer snobs we chose K. Gold. We were champions after all and Gold is what we deserved with our home coup. That swamp water went down our esophagus like the glorious victory. New place to live. New city. Just us...

The next day we almost died from terrible beer hangover. The victory was over and it was time to pay the rent.

K Gold, like no other beer hang over...

Another fantastic gift idea!

Craft beer with your face on it! 6 pack it for Christmas!

I honestly thought you were joking....

On a side note with pens, Castle Mountain had a really cool one. It's no bigger than an average pen, but you can pull out a retractable trail map from it. It's pretty unique. And a good pen, too!

Those letter openers are actually awesome. I got one from a computer store in town and used it until it went dull.

As for what I use of company logo merchandise:
- keychains
- letter opener
- gym bags
- flashlights
- usb stick
- pens

As has already been pointed out, whatever you're going with though, make sure it's a decent quality item. For me at least, that generally determines if it's going to get used or not.

Also, this thread makes me want to go get a case of Kokanee Gold.
