Crappy beer league experience is frustrating. I played on a team a long time ago where I was the old guy at age 28. we had a bunch of 18-20 year olds, the maturity level was tough to deal with. I ended up leaving at the end of the season after almost getting into a fight with one of our own players over his unsportsmanlike BS.
We had a 3-2 lead late in the final game of the playoffs, this kid gets a stupid penalty, then fires the puck and almost hits the ref. I still can't believe he didn't get another penalty. He's still chirping, I had to physically push the guy to the box, all the while he's threatening "to kick my old ass".
We ended up winning, everyone is happy but me. This clown comes over to me in the dressing room and says "no hard feeling, right?" I told him to get bent.
Found a decent team a decade ago, great ice times, affordable to play, and just good guys to play with, makes all the difference in the world.
Good luck!!

I am contacting the leagues in Huntsville to see if I can join during the season. They have three divisions and a bunch of teams. The only problem is that they're a little over 2 hours away.

Most arenas will give last year's renters first dibs on retaining their spot. It's just good business. Nothing wrong with seeing if you can get it, but arenas are generally better off maintaining those relationships. Perhaps it is less important down there with less other arenas providing competition.

One of the teams I play with is an old timers team (35+) and our goalie is downright brutal. But, then so is everyone on the team. We regularly lose in double digits. The key is, if you can, talk to the forwards about sticking to their man. Thats basically all you can do if your players aren't very talented. Try to teach the boys about body position, don't chase the puck, go to where to opposition is trying to get to and put your body and stick in the way, make it difficult to get a shot off.
I would yell at the forwards before I get upset at your goalie.
That or just be the dirtiest team in the league, that sometimes makes losing feel slightly better, haha.
(I am sure it's obvious from my post that I am a D man, haha)

I played on a team in one league where we were routinely beat by 10-15 goals every game. It was a small league, so there were only two divisions. Most of the teams were stocked with guys who had played anywhere from the midget AAA to guys who played for some us colleges. We were almost always hopelessly overmatched, as we were about a div 6 nchl team realistically.
It got pretty disheartening, but at the time my friends were on the team, so I just had fun putting on the gear once a week and challenging myself.

last year i had a good laugh - i beleive my team was something like 3-30-0 last year. One game we played the score was 4-0 before I took my first shift. At the end of the first one of the d-men starts barking at me to play harder (score was 7-0 at the end of the first), I told him that my line was the only forward line that was still even - so he needed to go elsewhere to get some results......
I should note that my forward line was likely even due to luck - surprisingly it was hard to get pumped up to play when you are down four before even breaking a sweat.....

OP, my old beer league team used to get crushed as well. But then we didn't.

maybe i read it wrong , I thought he had no ties to the team but was just playing to play. He got put on some group and they weren't very good.

We won our last game 5-2 and so far we're 2-5 this season.
I've talked to a few guys that are on the powerhouse teams and asked them to not cherry pick and run it up 15 goals. I explained that it's not fun for either squad and it would probably be better if they would pass it to their less talented players so they can get better. Most seemed to agree with it, and now I'm trying to get myself on another team with a couple guys I know.
they keep stats and I'm playing Defense 1G 4A 6PIM
I don't get many shot opportunities, I have a hard shot and when I do get a chance I let rip and all the assists are off of rebounds.
I missed our last game because I had to go to iowa to visit the in-laws and we didn't have a game this week and we get to play the pink team that beat the holy piss out of us last time.
Our team lost a player for the year with a Fractured Vertebra, he is a very good skater and caught an edge at full speed going towards the net and launched himself back first into the boards.

I would just walk a case of beer into the other dressing room and start making friends. Maybe you can set up a trade.

You tell the guys cherry picking that there is no need to cherry pick and run up the score and if they continue to do so you will rail road them and knock them into next week. Then you run them them next time they try to do this. As they lie on the ice catching their wind you go to the box for 2 minutes and feel shame(but really you feel good). Then you set free and they don't do it again.
Trust me this works
