Off topic but Steve Armitage is doing the speed skating commentary for Sochi. He is indicative to what is wrong with cbc sports. Old hacks that can't make it anywhere else but make a very good living off the taxpayer while delivering a less than mediocre service.

Hockey is one of the only things that makes money for CBC, if not for HNIC the network would be in serious trouble and cost even more 'taxpayer dime'

I disagree with almost everything in this post. I do think they are good at news...but I think they are best at sports, especially the Olympics!

If true, Lebrun wasted a move over to TSN. Wonder if he will crawl back to CBC.

Ummm, hockey is one of, if not CBC's biggest strength.

Put me in the camp that feels nothing is better for hockey coverage then CBC satruday night. But maybe that's just cause I grew up with it. Still I've never really loved TSN's coverage and they way they do games, despite being a slick production with some good on air talent, it's always seemed to lack something that I can't really articulate. If it was music, I'd say the TSN coveraged lacked a little soul tbh.
Regardless, I like that CBC will keep Saturday night, and I couldn't care less who else owns national rights. The on air talent worth talking about will eventually land where the work is, and can you imagine CBC if some of the best TSN folks eventually were on the Saturday night coverage...........that might be the best outcome.

Hopefully this will force Sportsnet to poach some TSN talent.
Cuthbert for Sportsnet Flames please

I think the only thing that can limit the NFL's rise in Canada is the NHL. Because of this, I'm all for wall to wall NHL coverage on Sunday night.

Great - cash strapped cbc shells out big dough to land this big talent, putting them further in the red. How does that make sense?

I could be wrong, but I only notice a delay for Flames telecasts on SN, not any other team.

The NHL's coverage in the U.S. is on a second-rate channel because the league took the bigger payoff instead of considering which network would do more to promote their brand. Not surprised they'd do the same with the new Canadian contract.

I'll be disappointed if TSN doesn't carry national games. It adds some nice variety to HNIC and SN.

What are you talking about, there is 0 in my post about economics, wasn't even discussing that angle.
But since you bring it up, I guarantee the deal made for the NHL rights will be NPV / ROI positive for which ever network is awarded it. It's a money making machine, including after they shell out for the top on air talent.
The fact that CBC bleeds cash has nothing to do with it's hockey coverage. As others have pointed out, the hockey coverage is likely one of a handful of shows that make money for that network. So your suggestion is the struggling network that is losing money, should not invest in the one product guaranteed to make a positive return on their investment? Hope you don't run your own business.

Pay $200M for broadcasting rights or lose $175M in advertising...not great for them, but imagine how low viewership would get without people tuning in once a week and being exposed to other CBC shows.
Come to think of it, how does HNIC generate $175 in ad revenue? It seems all that's flogged on HNIC is other CBC programming that I would never watch in a million years anyway.
