Brent Sutter didn't know how to use him. I'm not sure he knew how to properly use anyone, come to think of it. Everybody underachieved while he was the coach.
He never was insanely good. He was adequate playing in Phanuef's shadow and journeyman-like after Phanuef was traded.

By Month --- GP --- PTS --- +/-
October --- 12 --- 6 --- 4
November --- 14 --- 7 --- 8
December --- 14 --- 4 --- -1
January --- 15 --- 3 --- 0
February --- 7 --- 3 --- -3
March --- 15 --- 5 --- -7
April --- 5 --- 1 --- -5

Sutter thought that Phanuef was holding him back and was wrong.

St.L. loses Pietroangelo and Bouwmeester will revert to being adeqaute in meaningless games.

JBo is a good player, but he's "flourishing" in STL because he's playing with Alex Pietrangelo who is a great player. Personally, I was of the mind when he was here that he was better suited to a 2nd pairing role playing 20-22 minutes a night not against the other team's top lines. Apparently I underestimated him, because if you give him a #1 D to lean on he's a very capable #2.

I thought after the trade, Regehr was paired with Ian White? I don't recall who Bouw was playing with.

Have the St. Louis Blues won anything in recent memory, they make the playoffs which is good I guess. Sounds like a good team for Jay Bouwmeester.

I never watched Bouwmeister before he came here... I mean really, who watches Florida Panthers games?

I like many others was a victim of the hype around him and his scoring record in Florida. I thought we were getting the next Scott Niedermeyer. We didn't.

Instead we got a soft defenseman who skates really well, a so-so shot from the point, who has tendency to cough up the puck.

Bouw is as much a victim of the contract he signed with the Flames as Luongo is with his with the Canucks. There was no possible way, with his skill set, that he could have lived up the Flames expectations.

Glad to see that he's doing well in St Louis where the pressure on him isn't so great. I'm sure he's a much happier man.

Bouw was a good defenseman the whole time he was here and I think he still had solid value while here.
Yeah, I don't think it's true at all.

For all this 'being misused' talk, Bouwmeester was the best defender on the team every year he was here. He was always a top 3 player on the team and always a top pairing defender league wide.

He was a pro while he was here, and there was definitely interest in his services around the league.

Talent and skating were never an issue with him.

Playing in a hockey market when he is such a shy guy definitely is. I don't think he can handle the media scrutiny in a hockey market. He could not have been more uncomfortable in front of the camera.

Glad it is working out for him there.

Didn't Bouwmeester say he really loved living in Calgary? I recall him saying after the trade how disappointed he was to be leaving. I'm sure he's over it now that he has a solid chance at a cup though.

Who was the former player that was asked how it was to play against Jay and he said he liked it because Jay was sure to cough up the puck in his own zone?

I haven't watched him play in StL. Is he still coughing up the puck on a semi-regular basis?

Edit: Found it... it was Michael Pecca....

I would attribute it to playing on the Blues that already has a stacked (and more physical) blue line where he's not being dragged down by the likes of Butler.

Hes playing for the best coach in the league in one of the best run teams in the league. Not hard to believe he is doing well, although with 1G I wouldnt say he is flourishing.

Bouwmeester and Stajan. Two examples of how 'good' of a coach Sutter was.

Bouwmeester is not that good. He was never a #1. The Flames would not be any better right now if he were here. Anyone thinking that he is more valuable to us than Poirier, Berra and Cundari is completely out to lunch. The same goes with wishing we had our #5 pick back for Russell.

October/November Bouwmeester earned his paycheck & put up numbers similar to his career averages. .5 PPG & +12 through 26 games is what we expected to get from him.

agreed but not insanely good. 40 pts would have been the off season expectations. He was averaging 40 pts for 4 seasons in Florida with no cheap Iginla assists.

Over those fisrt 26 games Phauef had 6 goals 13 pts and was +5

Regehr had 10 pts and was +5

Gio 8 pts and +3

Sarich had 2 pts in 17 of those games and was +4

The Flames were a big plus team.

Bouwmeester played with Steve Staios. Sutter really liked a lefty with a righty at the time.
