So should we just shut this place down then? I assure you, the posters opinions on here about fixing the points system are not the only ones that "won't change anything" about the topic at hand. I'd say somewhere in the 99% range is about right for the % of topics that get discussed on here that the posters discussing them have no ability to alter or impact............. so if that's the criteria we are going to use for allowable discussion and debate...........we are truely hooped.

No, because some topics are much better for discussion than other. Individual mileage may vary, of course -- it's just the points debate is so hopelessly one-sided while at the same time so completely ineffectual.

Lots of people might enjoy exchanging arguments about the best way to eliminate the "loser point", or how all games should be unlimited sudden death OT with no ties. Fine, great, it's never going to happen.

Sorry if I came across like I think all discussion about everything NHL related should be shut down or CP be mothballed. The points thing just seems like a particularly pointless discussion. Even if you could stretch that argument to suggest all discussion here is pointless, the standings stuff is farthest along the spectrum of pointlessness.

In your system, a team with a 1 goal lead with 5 minutes left has 3 points. If they blow it, they could have 0 points with the possibility of 1? maybe 2? but could be 0. I'd be really trapping and holding onto my lead even moreso than now.

We see this in soccer a lot, a team with 3 points trying to hold on and even if they blow it, they still get a tie. From 3 to 0, I'd be scared.
That's the whole point though? You want to be scared to lose. Right now the current system isn't giving that much of an incentive to be because theoretically you could play it safe for 60 minutes, and then get the same amount of points you would have if you played balls to the wall for the first 60 minutes.

You want to encourage teams to finish games in regulation, and if that can't be done, push for the win in OT.

OT should remain 5 on 5 but eliminate the off-side rule.
The last 2 minutes both goalies play with no sticks.

If they can't bring themselves to go to 3 points for a win, I'd be fine with not getting a loser point simply for making it to OT. I prefer 3-2-1 but would be fine with 2-0.

I'd much rather things stay the way they are. As it is, they've already confused me with the new playoff format, which I just now fully understand. Don't confuse me anymore.
