Anybody remember the Calgary Flames having a cross ice mascot game during the intermission? Would have been in the early 90's. They played in the neutral zone with blue bumpers on either blue line to keep the puck in.
They had 10 different mascots out there, all on skates, all with sticks, playing an actual 5 on 5 game of shinny. It was pretty interesting because not all the costumes were well suited to hockey.
For example, Mr Sub (from Subway) couldn't put both his arms in front of him because his trunk was so thick. So he just had the stick out to one side. Couldn't really skate either, since the costume went below the knees.
Mr Green Drop however, was basically just a guy in a green leotard, and had full mobility. Also, he appeared to have played a bit of minor league hockey prior to his gig as a animated representative for a lawncare company. So when that puck wound up in Mr Sub's skates, and Greendrop went charging in, he had some pretty good velocity at impact.
Long story short - Greendrop came away with the puck, and Mr. Sub went spinning off to the side. That Sub didn't move again until they carted him off to get the zam out there. Coincidence I never saw another mascot half ice game?
I'll never forget seeing the Mr Sub laying face up at center ice... not moving, but with that big stupid Subway grin plastered across his face.
