Or Smith goes to the Minors and they just activate Cammalleri. Smith is not any better than Breen and doesn't have a future with the club IMO. Makes more sense to demote Smith and not put Breen on waivers.

That's overly complicated when they could have just put Breen on waivers today and accomplished the same thing. That way, he would have still been available to the Heat for their game today.

I think the fact that they made this move before Abbotsford's game today is probably a good indication that they plan on playing Breen and Horak tomorrow and/or Tuesday and didn't want them playing 5 games in 5 nights.

Doesn't sound like Breen or Cammalleri will be in soon:

Scott Cruickshank ‏@CruickshankCH 23m #Flames LW Michael Cammalleri skating on a line with D Chris Breen and assistant coach Martin Gelinas. So . . . not ready. #nhlpn

That's not a bad line. Has over 1000 career NHL points in it...

This does not add up. For one, Breen played for the heat on the weekend, so its not like he is hurt. Second, Breen just got re-called and has already arrived in LA and gotten on the ice?

Yeah could definitely see that happening, but I'd be pretty pissed about it if they didn't give Breen a legitimate chance. By all accounts from the Heat watchers and from Ward himself, Breen has played well and deserves a serious look. If they do what you suggest, that would be really stupid of this organization.

Smith is a decent player, but he's also a crappier version of Russell and Brodie, and another crap level below Wideman and Giordano. You don't need 5 of these guys on your defence. There has to be some size and stay at home types. Butler has the tools, but not really the make up to be a stay at home guy. SOB is decent, gets hated on more than I think he should. Breen is the perfect guy to be in that 5/6 spot for the Flames.

Flames need that size and presence on the backend. Enough with the smurf defence core. Let Breen learn on the job in the NHL. He has a greater upside than Smith and Butler.

Praying to the Hockey Gods that Breen replaces Butler. Full time too.

Listening to the Heat broadcast and Astle says Ramage has been their most versatile defender this season. Plays in all situations. I'd put him in as the next guy to get a call up if Breen doesn't work out.

"It feels good enough [to play]," he said, but noted that the decision doesn't lay in his hands. "I don't know what the coaches want to do and the trainers want to do as far as return to play but it felt really good today.

"We'll see what they say."

Head coach Bob Hartley foresees making the call on Cammalleri's readiness tomorrow afternoon.

"We'll see about Cammy. Cammy did very well in practice. Tomorrow morning, we're going to see again. I think he should be a game-time decision."
Quote:
The Flames recalled forward Roman Horak and defenceman Chris Breen from the Abbotsford Heat on Sunday afternoon. Hartley isn't sure if either will be in the lineup against the Kings.

"We'll see. We're going to sit down with the coaches and we'll see if we want to bring some changes to our lineup."

Glencross and Butler for Horak and Breen.

And then I woke up.

It was the plan all along to bring him back to the main club for the LA game according to Breen, so he left early this morning for LA, cause as this interview shows he was there.

Coaching staff must be really down on Smith as he couldn't even get in the lineup once before getting sent down and Jones and Hartley just don't mix. I expect if Breen comes in it will be at the expense of SOB. As much as people crap on Butler he would be a much better partner for Breen than SOB.

Too bad for Jones. He looked great in the preseason and from what I heard also played very well in his two games in Abbotsford.

Jackman, Blair Jones, Mcgrattan would be a tough fourth line.

I'm excited about the possibility of seeing Breen play. Also, I had almost forgotten that Derek Smith still exists

I noticed on Saturday's game summary against the Sharks that Christopher Breen was a healthy scratch. Was he called up the day before?

Since he was technically on the NHL roster during his conditioning stint, he was technically an NHL scratch.
