Safeway because it is right across the street from me. And if you take advantage of the club card savings, you can save quite a bit. You can also use your club card for discounts on gasoline.
Superstore if I have to buy in bulk/make larger purchases.
I find safeway to have a decent produce section, and the meats at my Safeway (Glenmore landing) are always high quality. In fact, I find their quality of meats to be the best among all the grocery stores I've been to.
Sobey's is a POS and I hate setting foot in that place. It seems like all the refuse and discarded food items from the higher up chains end up in Sobeys.

For sure, not even everything at the service counter is dry aged. You can tell which ones are dry aged, because:
1) They have a sign, and they label it
2) You have to ask for it specifically
3) It's considerably more expensive

Coop because its the most convenient store from my house, it is a bit pricier but I do find their fruits etc. is more fresh compared to superstore/safeway.
Costco is for the bulk and big stuff

while we're kinda on the subject of beef, I heard yesterday that a huge slaughterhouse/cutting plant is reopening north of Calgary near Balzac - a Colorado millionaire is investing I believe.
One good point must be to be reduce the Albertan Beef industrys reliance on 1 big dirty plant in brooks.
Derek - Totally agree with everything you said but damn do you make me feel so old fashioned - i'm totally trained and love cutting meat the old way!! Amazing amount of tradition and skill involved...

Make myself feel old to. Went to School to learn how to cut meat and worked as a Meat Cutter for 10+ years, loved it but just worked my can off for $20/ hour. Left to go into sales

Costco - bulk items, freezer stuff (veggies, chicken breast, fish); cheese; meats
Superstore - pantry items: pasta, sauces, spices; milk/dairy; some produce - onion, potatoes, etc. Their PC stuff can actually be really good - PC Chips, PC ice cream can be better then major brands
Safeway - something I forgot to pick up or things with a safeway club card discount
Coop - almost never, just never shopped there
Sobeys - usually the deli for lunch

I just go to Superstore. No other grocery stores for me. It is the closest store to my house. We often walk in there in the summers.
One stop shop is the best. I can't beleive how many different grocery stores & department stores we went to when I was a kid shopping with my parents. What a waste of time!

I think when comparing costco you need to add in 2 factors
1) samples
2) hotdogs

I don't know about "very few", but I can tell you this: If you go to SAIT and join up with the Meat Ops program, you will have a job coming out of there if you aren't a total dud.
The industry just doesn't resonate with a lot of students or cooking students will take it as part of their dream to open their own place.
BTW if you know any Cutters, I am hiring.

I usually hit Superstore for the bulk of our grocery needs, and Co-op for produce.

COOP for me. Super convenient with high quality meats, fruits and vegetables. If you know how to shop it can be cheaper then the other places.
Safeway = most expensive
Costco = you buy crap you think is good but isnt but then you have litres leftover
Superstore = line ups equals punches to the face. The fruits and vegetables are the lowest quality I have ever seen.
Wal Mart = you have to walk among the golems of Calgary while you shop.
