Mark Cohon stated at this mornings annual State of the League that, they don't want to publicize which players are available in expansion draft to avoid tension between teams and their players.

one thing is certain from looking at rosters across the league, the REDBLACKS "should" be a decent team to start...they could/should be better than Winnipeg and Edmonton and may challenge Montreal. All of this suggests they have good management/drafting/trading skills along with a Coach that doesn't go all Kavis on them.

Only the CFL could be this freaking stupid.

I actually see their point. It could cause tension between players and management. Still, I would rather know the lists myself!

They're professional athletes. Guys get waived/bought out/trade rumoured. Most top players will get protected anyways, and the rest should understand there are only limited protection spots. Not to mention by now these players are well aware of the business, you think they dreamed of playing in the CFL? (besides the few Canadians), they've bounced around from practise rosters, to NFL Euro, to AFL, to CFL practise rosters etc. If this causes tension between your club and you, you need to find another team/profession.

The example Cohon used is just stupid, asking Jones if he would be ok if his boss at the newspaper kept certain people and let go the others. Just idiotic.

Pro sports by its very nature is inherently unfair. Regardless of whatever spin (and thats all it is) Cohon wants to paint on this, this draft is a day that the CFL can use to build some drama/excitement.

Have TSN cover it live as Ottawa makes its picks...have team GM's explaining why they left X player off the protected list and how it will affect his club moving forward. Have an hour long pre-draft show with the CFL panel making their picks and analysis.

In short, use this one time event to PROMOTE your league during a time it usually would have zero mention on sports channels nationally. Make it an EVENT.

But nope...we are the CFL where feelings of players are much more important than doing something for the health of the league and to appease our paying customers.

The CFL is often called bush league...and they rarely do themselves any favors to change that image.

Absolutely ridiculous.

Agreed transplant, but this is the CFL were talking about. They sometimes make it hard on themselves to be viewed as a 'professional' league. The renovation of Ivor Wynne Stadium is a great example of that.

This tidbit is interesting...

Teams are free to make trades until a week before the expansion draft;

I didn't see anything about if Ottawa pick a player that a team like to hang on but couldn't protect, can that team make a trade with Ottawa for that particular player? I am sure I confused a lot of you so here is an example.

Calgary did not protect P Rob Maver and Ottawa picked him. Can the Stamps ask Ottawa to trade Maver back to Calgary for a draft pick and/or someone on their negotiation list or roster player? Is the CFL prevent them to make that move?

I think that once the draft is done the RBs can do what they please...and that includes trades.

The more I think about it the more I agree with you. I'm just a huge CFL fan so I tend to protect them or give them the benefit of the doubt. With TSN losing all hockey rights next year, nthis is a perfect time to make the CFL their number one property and market the hell out of it. I would love for TSN to start making the CFL appear more prime time by investing money into their production of games. On screen first down line, line of scrimmage, and arrows showing down and yards. More cameras and better camera angles. The cable cam must be a permanent feature for every game. I would like to see more documentaries of the history and players, special features, etc. TSN has the chance to take the CFL to the next level, possibly spurring on the elusive 10th team.

Interesting read by Childress over at CFLHorseman for all eight teams, very well done as well, and I beg to differ on some of the players he protected but who doesn't as we all have different opinions.

so if there is a trade freeze 1 week prior to the draft we should see some moves this weekend as Monday would be the deadline.
Will be interesting to see if Toronto does flip their backup QB

Being told #Als won't protect Canadian OL Kristian Matte. He'll be one of RedBlacks' first picks in expansion draft because he's bilingual.

I am not saying Matte won't be a pick but if they are making picks based on guys language ability and not football abilities then the RedBlacks are going to continue the tradition of gong show football in Ottawa.

Be interesting to see if Hugh Campbell has any strings to pull now in this draft and lead up to is, now that his son is a head coach.

The guy who upended AJ Gass' helmet throw CFL suspension by finding an Alberta Judge who was a Esks season ticket holder to overturn it.

The guy who got Troy Davis and Comiskey from Hamilton for future considerations...everyone knew it was going to be for Jason Maas, but Campbell got to keep Maas until the end of the season as backup to Ray (and he won the WF when Ray struggled).

And yeah, if speaking French is going to leapfrog you above better talent at any position, could be a long build.

Draft is tomorrow!

Will be interesting to see how many FA's get re-signed tomorrow (or shortly after the draft) assuming they aren't selected.
