Finishing last only means that there is farther to come back up. Edmonton is struggling with that right now. They are getting better, but they had so far to go.
Edmonton was an improved team last year, and Calgary had brutal goaltending and had a lot of things go wrong, yet finished with essentially the same record as Edmonton last season - 19 wins and 29 losses.

I would not. Finish last this year and next year. Then let the dominance begin.

This would be like a fourteen or fifteen point underdog winning a game outright in the NFL. Does it happen? Yes. Often? Of course not. Maybe once in twenty. Those are about our odds to make the playoffs. One in twenty. 5%.

Sportsinteraction.com had Flames listed at 5 point something to 1 to make the playoffs, during the preseason. Longest shot in NHL.

I think the mentality, excitement, talent and attitude from this team is vastly different from the past. I think as long as Ramo can be a top 20 starter, we'll see some pleasant surprises this season. This stems from the "by committee" approach and relief from those ridiculous expectations. If we're a hard working team that has everyone committed and fighting to be part of the roster, we'll catch a lot of teams off guard. That is exactly what happened with the Blue Jackets last season.

I'm happy just watching exciting hockey again, win or lose. Watching the team lasily feed the puck to Iginla and have him lose it in the corner - which was the status quo for the past two years - has been beyond painful.
I love what Iginla did for the franchise, but it was time to move on. The games post-deadline, were the most exciting Flames games I've watched in years. Watching a team like Winnipeg last night, demonstrated to me how exciting an up and comming team can be. The expectations are low, but every player is struggling to solidify their position in the NHL.
I really think the Flames will be more competitive than people think. Many vets are in contract years or need to continue to show their worth. The rookies and young guys need to prove themselves. It's a hungry team. I wouldn't bet on us to make the playoffs, but we won't be dead last either.

I take optimism in this season to be renewal and development all while building up a pool of prospects that can return this team to contending status. I take optimism from the view of multiple seasons not from one game to the next.

How can you do that? Seriously, how does somebody hope that their favorite team sucks? I cannot cheer for the Flames to lose.

Yes, the Oiler method for rebuilding is exactly what we should be aspiring to.

So after 5 games it has been an exciting ride!
Great to see all the positive energy and enthusiasm.
Next 5 games will be very telling. Road games in Ana, LA, Phx, SJ and Dal. Phx games is 2nd of back to back. I would have expected 1-3-1 at best. That would still give them 11 points in first 10 games (7 road 3 home) which would be a very good start.
However... the delusional fan can now fantasize for more!
We've seen weak teams get out to fast starts, then fall hard. Well, I'm going to enjoy this while it lasts.
Gotta admit the Oilers bad start gives me a warm feelng inside too.
