Lots of good potential complimentary pieces and depth, but short on game changers if we want to be in the top 5 in the league.

Current to 3ish teams:

Boston: Chara, Krejci, arguably more
Pittsburgh: Crosby, Malkin, Letang
Chicago: Toews, Kane, Keith

We still don't have those guys. Hopefully 1 in the pipeline after this year

Crosby/Malkin/Chara types come along every 10-20 years so that's not really fair.

As for Toews, Kane, Keith & Krejci... the Flames most certainly have guys with that kind of upside.

Reaching that potential is another story altogether but to say the Flames don't have those types of players is a little hasty IMO.

I'll give you Toews and Krejci....because I think Monahan could possibly fill those shoes (in Toews case, if we're a little lucky), but I gotta disagree with the other guys.

I just don't see a Patrick Kane level guy in our organization currently. Perhaps you're thinking Sven (or Gaudreau?), but I think there's a difference between a guy like him, and a first overall draft pick who already has a Calder and a Conn Smythe under his name. Both might be skilled guys, but I think Kane has that additional step up. The guy was already a Calder winner at Svens age, and had 72 points in his first season.

Also, who is the defenseman that could be a Norris trophy winner? I would love it if we had one, because that's one of our biggest holes, but I don't see anyone with that kind of realistic potential.
