Disagree.
I looks like we'll have Backlund, Horak, Monahan, Baertschi, Galiardi, Ramo, O'Brien, Russell, David Jones, and Hanowski, all in full time roles. Backlund was the only one of those players who played the full season with the Flames last year, and he'll have a much expanded role.
So that's already 10 new faces. Plus we are likely to see several more faces through the year. By next trade deadline, it's likely that over half the team will be new. Pretty big turnover for one year.

Indeed, I'm glad all of the games are going to be available to listen to this season.

Nothing surprising. All these guys will see time in the NHL this season. Well, except Kanzig. Knight and Reinhart will probably be full time NHLers by the end of the season but need some more seasoning in the A first. Flames have a lot of UFA's that'll be moved by the trade deadline so its not like we won't see these guys again.

Thought they would keep Knight up for a couple more days to battle with Horak. Guess the chose Horak outright. Can't say i blame them, Horak had a great camp and looked very good between Bouma and Jackman.

There just isn't space on the roster for any of those guys. Knight and Reinhart were competing with Monahan, Horak, and Galiardi. The decision there was pretty clear in my eyes. Ferland was good, but was outplayed by Bouma. Still wondering why Kanzig was kept around for so long, while other 2013 draft picks were sent home fairly early. All things considered, I'm pretty happy with how the Flames are handling the rebuild. Mixture of youth and vets should keep the Flames competitive.
Not sure this roster is going to be any more difficult to play against than last years though. Some toughness/grit was added, but mostly to lines that do not get much ice-time.

How did Hanowski make that list?

Hanowski was sent down with the first cuts wasn't he?

In evaluating the moves, I think these are fair questions:
Is it a priority to win hockey games?
Is it a priority to develop young players? Where?
Is it a priority to "earn" a lottery pick?

Tells us that Bouma is going to make the team and Monahan will get a few NHL games in. I think Knight will be back in the line up very soon.

Bit surprised about Knight but IMO Horak has earned it. Knight will be back up when Stajan is traded.
The rest are no surprise at all.

Must have been something specific they wanted to work with him on one-on-one whether that was in regards to his injury, on ice stuff or maybe even fitness/conditioning with a guy his size since they didn't play him in games and it is tough to imagine he would be remotely close to in competition for the Flames.

I fully expect at least Jackman to be traded/waived and maybe a dman (Pllllleaaase Butler, go away) in order to make room for Ferland/Knight, Seiloff some time during the season and most of the players that we seem to want on the team (Sieloff, Horak, Knight, maybe Cundari or Breen) end up on the team by the end of the year.
People are jumping the gun as to what this indicates for management. Moves have to be made for any of these guys to play. It doesn't happen instantly.

Yes and apparently has had a few good games with the Heat already... but I don't think he is coming back up to the Flames any time soon.

Fan960Steinberg That likely means 2 of 4 bubble d-men will be cut and 2 of 6 bubble forwards plus one goalie. Tough to guess, especially at forward. #Flames

Switch Bouma for Hanowski.

This move actually says a lot.
Knight going down means that to them Monahan > Knight for 3rd line C position. Feaster said that's why they brought him in over the summer. Going into camp you could've said he was already a shoe in for that position. So the fact that Monahan bumps him out of contention for that spot I think means that Sean's now got a much bigger chance to crack the roster today than he did yesterday.
Of course Horak can still be in that conversation too, but I think he can easily be played on the wing as well, if needed (or on the 4th line).
Too bad for Ferland, but they weren't playing him, so not like he could do much to change his outcome.

I've said this before, but what is the purpose of having Ferland/Knight replace Jackman? More than likely Jackman will be in the pressbox. I don't see how having Ferland or Knight taking his spot eating popcorn would be a good thing.

So the Flames should ignore contract status despite the fact that it plays an important role in NHL franchise operations? I don't understand what you expected them to do.

His bubble players:

Just did up the depth chart. My bubble players: Baertschi, Bouma, Horak, B Jones, Street, Jackman, Butler, Smith, Sieloff, Breen.
|
If it's two forwards and two defencemen getting cut, I think it will be Jones, Street, Breen, and Sieloff heading west. All of them except Sieloff need to clear waivers, so it makes sense to wait until the weekend when every team will be putting fringe players on waivers.
