Perhaps sacrilige, but would it make sense to move Monahan to wing (once the regular season starts)? A little less responsibility for a young guy? Hard to believe a Flames coach uttering the words "overload of centres"!!!

So Reinhart, Horak, Ferland and McGrattan swapped with Street, D. Jones, Galiardi and Jackman. It appears it is down to those eight. McGrattan is likely safe, but it's a toss-up after that.
The D hasn't changed, looks like that's our starting D corps.
Is Berra getting another look because MacDonald hasn't played well?

Galiardi and D.Jones are also safe.
I think it's between Knight and Horak for a spot. Think Bouma has already secured his 4th line wing spot. Think Reinhart and Ferland will be sent down. Would like Ferland on the team but i don't see space for him.

No point in stunting the development of our future #1 center to make room for Corban Knight. Knight needs to make an impact tonight, wherever he plays.

I'm starting to warm up to our top 4 D, but man, we need Breen/Wotherspoon/Seiloff/Cundari to step up, look at that bottom pairing!!!

I agree about Galiardi and D. Jones. I know the expectation is that there will be a youth infusion on opening day, but it will not shock me to see Horak, Reinhart, Bouma, Ferland and Street all sent down because they have two-way deals. If the Flames are sold on any of them they have to move bodies. We mgiht see one of those five guys stick, but no more than that. Knight will stick, I think, though I think he's been outplayed by a couple guys who are going to be sent down.

I would think that David Jones and Galiardi are locks. So there are two spots for Reinhart, Horak, Ferland, Street, and Jackman to battle for. Haven't seen much of Blair Jones for a while.

Just Smith out and Butler in. Smith has looked pretty good but I honestly haven't seen any of the games that Butler has played in. Tonight should be interesting.

It probably has less to do with MacDonald and more to do with Berra being given the same opportunity as Ramo to prove himself. I think MacDonald is little more than a safety net that allows management to send Ramo or Berra down (though it seems very unlikely that Ramo goes anywhere other than the crease at the Saddledome at this point).

Smith is going to be so bad this year with his new pads.

The thing I noticed about Monahan is his defensive coverage is phenomenal for a rookie (better then some older players that we have recently seen over the years) so I don't think he is over his head in that aspect. The only question is how patient will fans and the team be in regards to his offensive production.

Can't wait to finally catch a preseason game tonight! Keep forgetting to watch the ones online, but won't miss tonight for sure. Excited to see Monahan in game action, not just highlights and training camp scrimmage.

I really had hopes of Ferland making this team. For a team that wants to get bigger and meaner he's ideal and he's had a very good preseason so far.
I get that he needs to prove himself at a AHL level, but he has a lot of NHL needed qualities that this team lacks.

first line minutes in the OHL or third line minutes in the NHL?

Just listened to Maher in the Morning from yesterday and he mentioned that Butler and Smith may be getting showcased for a trade and that is the explanation for not putting some of the D prospects like Wotherspoon, Kanzig, and Sieloff in these games.
That makes some sense, but it is also difficult to imagine that the Flames would throw these guys into regular season games without facing NHL-heavy lineups.

Of course he does but they can't force a guy to be NHL ready if he isn't.

Ferland is probably one of the many guys who are going to see icetime in the NHL this year whilst shuttling between Calgary and Abbotsford.
I love the idea of demotions for guys who start slipping and promotions for those who have earned it. As long as they are not arbitrarily sending players or limiting the demotions to two-way guys, I think the players can respect that process and the team will be able to keep guys hungry.

It's all about what helps his progression more. Playing 1st line minutes with Ottawa when he has clearly shown he is ready for pro hockey is counterproductive, no matter how much time on the ice he gets. Give him a few games and see how he goes, worse comes to worst we send him back down.

Feaster said he's been good in camp. Haven't seen enough to say for myself.
I'd be pretty surprised if he was demoted. I'm not sure Knight and Reinhart have passed him on the depth chart and I think he's liked more by the coaches than Jones.
