Homeland S1 was good for me, but I found myself cringing from embarrassment at times bad during the first few episodes of S2. Eventually, I stopped watching it altogether. Just seemed to hit that "over the top" apex a lot quicker than 24 ever did. Mind you, I suppose 24 is actually to blame for that...
Next up for me is probably Mad Men. I see it's on Netflix, and I've been meaning to give it a shot for a while now. Eventually I'll start watching Breaking Bad at some point too. Not right now, though.
Just want to give a shout out to The X-Files. Today is the 20th Anniversary of its debut on Fox. It was probably the first drama I actually enjoyed, and it became a tradition for me to watch it each Sunday night after The Simpsons. I remember my parents being mad at me so many Sunday night for refusing to go to bed before 11.
It had its ups and downs, but I have come to actually enjoy the downs (namely the Doggett years). Nothing could match the chemistry between Mulder and Scully, but I liked the change Patrick brought when he replaced Duchovny in season eight. The show had run a tad stale by the seventh season, and there are very few standout episodes in comparison to the preceding seasons.
Aside from the chemistry between the leads, the one thing I admired about the show is that it worked on so many different levels. Whether they wanted to create an emotional episode, thriller, horror, mystery, science fiction, or even a comedy the phenomenal writers managed to pull it off. In that aspect I don't think there was ever a show that could match that. Many of the best shows only managed greatness with one or two genres, but The X-Files were able to do the same using almost any style they desired. There are also countless shows that owe their existence to the show (Fringe, Lost, Criminal Minds, Supernatural, etc). During the 90's it was a standout among the heard, and to this day it remains one of the best shows of all time. Now if only they'd get around to giving the show the proper sendoff it deserves, and not the sadsack "I Want to Believe" movie they left is with.

Finished the first season via Netflix and am hopelessly hooked. Good storylines, a nice connection to sports, and some unbelievably good trash talk. Just wonderful.
VEEP is another show that I wouldn't have caught without Netflix. Highly recommend.
Sure, but the thread was about current favs...if this is about all-time favs, my list changes a helluva' lot.
Shh, it's more fun to imagine trackercrowe just approaching people randomly throughout his day so he can discuss the X-Files at them...I mean, with them.

Neat about the 20th anniversary. I'm actually watching it now for the first time ever. It used to be on too late when I was growing up - past my bedtime. I'm enjoying it. It seems to alternate between being really good and really poor. I don't mind that because I'm often able to put aside my annoyance at the clunkers because there's always a chance that the next episode is going to be amazing.

Didn't want to bump some random thread out of nowhere. It's still in syndication, and everything is essentially "current" to someone these days with Netflix and the like.

Well in that case, The Cosby Show.

Good ol' thread Nazi's, I hope you guys get paid well for your noble efforts in making big deals about nothing.
You should probably have gone after anyone who mentioned Arrested Development too, since as of now that show is no longer "current" either. Or you know, anyone else who mentioned a show that's no longer running.

Arrested Development, a show that just had a brand new season?
I'd say that qualifies as current, sir.

But as of today there are only plans to make another season. There are also plans to make another X-Files movie, and currently there is an X-Files comic series that continues on for season 10.
Spoiler!
So it could be argued that X-Files is just as current as Arrested Development right now. That and it was its 20th anniversary, which I wanted to bring up, but it didn't really demand a new thread.

Um, like almost every other TV show ever? Unless a show reaches mega hit status like Game of Thrones or The Sopranos, they only ever really plan to make one season at a time. And what exactly does a movie or comic series have to do with a TV series thread?

Yet there is another thread on this same page called "I need a new TV series to get into (old or new)" where people discuss classic series all the time
