If you like westernized Chinese food (ginger beef and the like) China Rose has decent westernized food. One of the few "No MSG" places for those who are sensitive to it.
If you want really good Chinese food (and enjoy eating spicy) SCHEZUAN Restaurant on 16th ave is really, really good.
GREAT TASTE Chinese restaurant in Chinatown is actually really good too.

The last time I was there however, the tea pots were full of beer and the bathroom was full of blood from a fight between gangsters doing coke so I don't know if that speaks to the quality of the establishment. It certainly has some street cred.

Is it true that New Harbour City was bought out by Nexen to renovate and use as a canteen for their new Chinese overlords? Word around the Chinese community is that CNOOC was worried that the influx of new employees from mainland China needed somewhere to get the food they were accustomed to.

Yuppers. This is true (according to my CNOOC / Nexen insiders).

Interesting. Will it be open for Nexen outsiders?

Gong Kee Restaurant in Forest Lawn by the Lucky supermarket is pretty good. It's a small place but the food is good. They have bar-b-q duck as well.

do not...I repeat.
DO NOT go to Soluxe. The new restaurant that replaced Harbour City.
It was the most disorganized place I've ever been to. I booked a table on a weeknight, they didn't have one for me when I got there. I should have left but they found one in the corner. Then I had to ask the waitress for menus.. then had to ask for tea. I really should have left.
If you don't ask for a waitress one will never come. We ordered 4 dishes they didn't have any of them. Cook was too busy. So we order 4 different once. Then a dish never came out, I wanted it off the bill since we were done eating, they insisted it was already cooking. It was vegetables! #### you. take it off the bill. And the food was awful, no taste to it at all. Dumplings were undercooked.
Never ever go there. My friends and I went to Golden Inn later in the week and it was fabulous. Go there!

The former owners of Harbour City now have a reastaurant about a block away called Lucky Place. I don't know if it's the best in the city, but I can certainly vouch that it's good.

China Rose has a loooong list of health violations. It's scary actually. Stay far away.

probably not classed as a restuarant but more of a cafe in chinatown is the 'Guilin'.
Always seems rammed in there and seems authentic and real yet in no way is it posh...

Signature Palace on Sirrocco Drive is pretty good. There menu is fairly westernizes, due to their location, but you can talk to the owner you can get the real stuff, or call ahead if you want something special made.

I don't mind Guilin but every time I walk into that mall I get drawn to Kim Chi House.

Fat Kee has good food.
We used to order Silver Dragon takeout as a family Christmas Dinner, it was good. However, we actually went in around New Years. Absolutely amazing.

Not the vegetarian place, it's in between the vegetarian place and Guilin.
Thanks SebC for the Lucky Place recommendation, I'll be checking it out for lunch tomorrow.

Soluxe is not really a restaurant for the public, least of all those with Western palates who are probably more used to Cantonese cuisine.
Harbour City was bought out by CNOOC for their Chinese Nexen employees to be a place they could feel comfortable and to eat their local foods from mainland China. That is what Soluxe is.

Perhaps.. but I brought 3 people from mainland china and they also hated it. The food wasn't anything special but the service was ridiculous. Is there no service in Beijing? I remember Asia as being super customer friendly. Almost to a fault.

Is it even supposed to be "great". I thought it was basically an off-site cafeteria.

The food is for the Northern Chinese tastes, they're quite different than anything you find in Calgary.
However crappy service always sucks.
