I have to/get to travel for conferences or training for work. We don't get compensated days in lieu for traveling during the weekends. All of our travel, lodging and meals are paid for while we are away. I can also extend my trip by a couple of days (paying for lodging and meals out of my own pocket) if I wanted to stay for a few days. If we're there for a conference we're not expected to take in every single moment, we can skip some conference sessions if we feel nothing applies during that session time, or if we are just feeling burned out. We get to treat it as a working holiday that our company pays for us to be at. So if we have to be there during a weekend, c'est la vie! However, we get planned days off during the week every few weeks. We can change that to a different day if we are away for work when that day was supposed to be.

With my company it depends on how enjoyable the destination is.
I have an annual 4 day meeting that runs Wednesday to Saturday and I travel home on Sunday. I am expected to work Mon/Tues and travel after work on Tuesday. For that I am paid the normal 40 hours with no time off in lieu. This is a business trip but it is more of a conference so there is something planned from dawn until dusk but it isn't all mandatory. It is in nice locations though like the Jasper Park Lodge and my expense claim is never questioned.
If I raised the issue of time off I would be told that attendance isn't mandatory and I am welcome to stay in the office and work.

I also have a Vegas trade show that is semi annual. I get paid only the bare minimum of hours and travel on weekends but I get a trip to Vegas where the vendors have expense accounts.

If it was a trip to some place terrible though I would push for something. Probably a return flight for the weekend or lenient expenses so I can go golfing or something on the days off. Alternatively I might work through the weekend and say nothing if it is rare knowing that there are no issues on days like today when I had to go home twice to meet contractors at my house and no one questioned my actions.

Salary doesn't mean they should work whenever you need them to. There is an expectation of basic general days/hours. If your offer of employment included the fact that they would need to put in extra time as needed to travel, then it's on them, but I don't know what you include in your offers so...

Sorry, but you sound like you expect quite a bit from your employees. Kind of glad I don't work for you.
I think he was pretty clear that he expects give and take. He gives leeway when it's slow, and then he expects to get some of that back in extra effort when things are busy.

Sorry, but you sound like you're not much of a team player. I'm glad I don't work with you.
